  • 5 Diane Brackenridge 30th Jan 2023

Professional service from first contact through to aftercare call following funeral.  I could not fault the service provided. The experience and calmness of the funeral director, Gary Elliot, was invaluable.   He navigated me through a very difficult and emotional time organising my mother’s funeral and respecting her wishes. On the day of the funeral he ensured everything was as it should be despite differing family opinions.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Coop Funeral services and Gary Elliot.

  • 5 Marie Ward 30th Jan 2023

Caring and attentive service, very friendly people to deal with in a difficult time

  • 5 Philip Donnelly 25th Jan 2023

Many, many thanks to Gary Elliot, funeral director, Co-op Funeralcare, Johnstone for lessening the emotional pressure in my hour of need and in the midst of an extremely stressful situation. Following the departure of my dear wife when I was burdened with grief, Gary provided me with comfort, consideration, thoughtfulness, attentiveness, politeness and much respect. He has due regard for the feelings and wishes of others.

From the viewing to the Salvation Army service in the funeral parlour and to the final resting place at the cemetery, Gary conducted the service with ease and professionalism and everything was timed to perfection.

My thanks again to Gary for his support and encouragement.

    Kind regards,

    Philip Donnelly

I had a great service from the team and this review would have been excellent if a few mishaps hadn’t happened.

This isn’t a complaint I would like to offer my suggestions to prevent these mistakes happening to a family again.

Firstly - on several occasions I told the team I would like 2 Celtic football scarves and a cowboy hat belonging to my dad to be placed on his coffin and returned to us after the service. Several times I mentioned this and on the days my dads coffin was on display these items were placed perfectly on the coffin. We really wanted these items back as the scarves were being passed to his granddaughters and the hat was a genuine cowboy hat he bought in Oklahoma and loved. There was a 3rd scarf which was slightly distasteful and I told the team this would go in the coffin as it referenced James Connelly who was in the Eastern Rising.  A few days before the funeral my daughter dropped some letters, photos and the scarf off at the parlour which were all to be placed in the coffin, again I will emphasise I mentioned the 3rd scarf should go in the coffin on several occasions.
On the day of the funeral the hearse arrived and the James Connelly scarf was fully displayed over his coffin which absolutely horrified me. Rather than make a big fuss in the street the scarf was folded to be hidden and left sitting on top of the coffin.
Again I mentioned that scarf should have been inside and we want the stuff from the top of the coffin back.
After the funeral I was outside the crematorium and asked the funeral director for my dads stuff from the top of the coffin, he giggled thinking I was joking and ran straight back inside. Sadly he came back out empty handed and the stuff couldn’t be retrieved and had gone with his coffin. I could genuinely see how upset the funeral director was about this situation, along with me.
For a tailored package these mishaps I didn’t expect as these are moments in time we can’t change, memories which stay with me in an already difficult time and precious items lost we can’t pass to his granddaughters.
Could I suggest that a disclaimer form is used for these types of requests, a form the client would fill out with the funeral team specifying these requests which the client would then sign and the team can re-read on the day of the funeral to refresh their memory.

Finally - I collected my dads ashes on Tuesday in a wooden casket we purchased from the coop. It wasn’t until yesterday evening a family member noticed his date of death has been engraved wrong on the casket. His date of death was 22nd October and date of birth 29th October. His casket says died 29th October 22. I’ve called the parlour today to report this and they’re arranging another one to be made and my dads ashes will need transferred to the new one, a thought which saddens me inside having to hand the casket back and move his ashes.
Could I suggest when ordering personalised/engraved items a second member of staff proof read the details before it’s sent to be inscribed. It was really an upset we didn’t need this week at a difficult time close to Christmas.

Again - this isn’t a complaint about the team as they were always on hand to help me, offer support etc.
Gary was great and his professionalism and gentle manner shone through always.
Emma was always on the phone keeping me updated, helping me with questions when I needed help.
Kellie our driver was fantastic on the day, another professional team member who is an asset to your company.

These suggestions I hope you can take on board to prevent mishaps happening in the future as it really does blemish the tailored package I was meant to receive at the cost I paid.

Fantastic respectful staff. Ensured that everything went smoothly. Recommend them.

  • 5 Lisa Broadhurst 12th Dec 2022

Allan, Paul, Emma and their colleagues at Johnstone could not have been more helpful, caring and understanding.
When we initially went to the funeral parlour, Allan explained everything to us, the options available and the costs. He was very considerate of our wishes and explained what would or wouldnt work.
We were kept updated throughout from the post mortem being completed, registration, embalming, viewing and the funeral itself.
If we had any questions to ask regardless of how trivial they may have seemed, the staff were always available to help whether it was by email, telephone or in person.
They helped make a difficult situation slightly easier. Very professional in every way.
