About Us

Darlington Crematorium on Carmel Road North, was one of the first few crematoriums in the country to be opened and was built in 1901. The current crematorium building was open in the early 1960s and includes two gardens of remembrance.

Most families use the services of a funeral director, but staff are happy to assist those who wish to conduct a service themselves. A cremation may take place every 30 minutes, and there is a 20-minute time slot available for a service, which can be extended if requested in advance.

Cremated remains may be removed and placed in a cardboard, wooden, or metal box or urn, and handed to the funeral director or family member. Those who prefer that ashes be interred can do so at the gravesite in Darlington cemetery. Cremated remains may be scattered in the new garden of remembrance which is carried out by staff, unless the family wants to be present, in which case advance notice must be given. If needed, ashes may be scattered in the old garden of remembrance, particularly if people want the remains to be scattered with other family members.

There is a chapel within the crematorium which can accommodate up to 58 people seated and a standing area for up to 40 guests. There is an organ at the chapel which can be used to play funeral music, or families can make use of the facilities to download and request their choice of music via the funeral director. There is a loop system in the chapel and Braille service books for those who have difficulty with eyesight.

Flowers are welcome and will be kept for a week, after which they may be moved to the gravesite or hospital/nursing home. Memorial donations such as rose shrubs and rose bushes are acceptable. You can record details of your loved on in the Book of Remembrance as an everlasting tribute, and an online version is also available to view.

There are toilet facilities available at the crematorium.

Get in touch with the team if you have an idea or request for a new memorial scheme or if you need further information or guidance on how to arrange a cremation.

Cremation may take place during the following hours:

Monday – Thursday: 9:15 – 11:45am and 1:15 – 3:45pm

Friday: 9:15 – 11:45am and 1:15 – 2:45pm
