• I was an ice cream van driver when we first met. You were truly welcoming (and the smelly pet!) Stories of Churchill amidst plumes of pipe smoke, A love of history; a wicked joke. Flirting with secretaries as a legal good-looker, And how your mother tried to execute you in the Sunnydene cooker! Fond memories of our late night talks by the fire, Our wives asleep: it's your counsel I'd desire. When I hit rock bottom you came in a trice, And gave me the most invaluable advice. Complex situations were handled with aplomb, A legal mind; everything under the thumb. But once in a while you would open up and reveal, Emotions linked to your father & the deep loss you still feel. A lifelong determination to be in the driving seat. Yet able to relax with wild grandchildren at your feet Amidst family drama (those daughters! such ructions!) With a wink you'd bellow
