Joyce Benigna Humphrys died on Monday 4th April 2022 after a brief spell in hospital. She was aged 90.

Joyce was born in Handsworth, Birmingham on 16th September 1931. She trained as a short hand typist and started working for Industrial Fan and Heater where she met her husband, Ken. They lived in Shirley in the West Midlands where his only son, Stephen, was born in 1966.

In 1973 the family moved to Nottingham and Joyce worked part time, teaching touch typing in a secretarial school. In the school holidays she even taught her son to touch type which was to become an extremely valuable skill in the era of modern computing. She subsequently became a PA to the head of Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University until she retired at 65.

She spent many holidays in Dorset, and loved messing about on the water. She especially loved an annual August Bank Holiday trip cruising around Poole Harbour. Later the annual boat trip moved to Henley on Thames where three families cruised in Rosetta to Marlow. Her son follows in the same tradition boating on the Thames and also in the Solent.

She played badminton regularly until later life, after which time she took up the more sedate sport of bridge, where she even won Master points. In the last six months of Mum's life she moved to Braywood Gardens, which is actually very close to where she played badminton but at this stage had given up the sport!

She was an active member of St James Church, Porchester taking part in a number of groups including the Couples Housegroup. Around 2013 after moving to Rainworth, she worshipped at Blidworth Methodist Church and helped at various events especially the very popular "Build a Breakfast".

After Ken passed away in January 2021, her faith helped her and she looked forward to being with Ken in heaven. She leaves her son, Stephen.

We will miss Joyce’s wisdom and council, she often gave us good advice about how to enjoy our retirement years. We enjoyed playing bridge with her and Ken especially because they were good players and were always interested in our various holidays and exploits. Joyce regularly commented on our holiday email diaries recounting her memories of places she and Ken had visited. It was clear to us how much they loved each other and how proud they were of Stephen. We will miss her.

"Aunty" Joyce was a great friend of my mother, Wendy, and father, Stan Dolman and was a big part of mine, Keith's and Terry's younger lives.

Sunday visits to Joyce, Ken and Stephen always included beautifully cooked Sunday roasts. One year we all ventured on a joint family camping holiday to Scotland where, I think, Joyce and Wendy were the only ones to venture for a swim into the freezing cold Loch.

Another one from our childhood years sadly departed. My thoughts and condolences are with Stephen.

I have many fond memories spent with my Aunty Joyce and Uncle Ken, visiting them often, with Phil, my husband in the past . I greatly enjoyed Joyce’s company, especially her wit and wisdom. I was always made to feel really welcome when I visited, and went on some lovely trips with them, to their favourite places. Memories to treasure.
