In loving memory of Dr. Ishwar Lal Bhatia who sadly passed away on 4th February 2021.

Residing in Ipswich for over 40 years, Dr. Bhatia was a retired GP, who dedicated his entire life to the NHS and the pursuit of helping others.

Much loved husband, father and grandfather, Ishwar was adored and hugely respected by the community and his patients alike.

Ishwar was educated in India in Agra at St John College and SN Medical College and began his medical career as a newly qualified doctor in Delhi.

After emigrating to the UK from India in 1973, Ishwar began his first role for the NHS in London before moving to Ipswich in 1975.

His initial posts in Ipswich were as Orthopaedic surgeon at Angelsea Rd Hospital and Ipswich Hospital. He then specialised as a General Practitioner in 1982 and joined the Landseer Road Practice, becoming partner and serving the local community for many years.

His reputation grew and at one point he had one of the largest patient lists in East Anglia. He later asked Dr. Jeph Vite to join him and they became instrumental in establishing the Ravenswood Surgery following a merger of other practices.

He officially retired in 2008 but remained a Locum GP and appraiser, mentoring other doctors for many years. Dedicated to his professional duties until the very end.

He will be fondly remembered by all his friends, family and patients for his kindness, gentleness, care and not least for his infectious smile. He was an amazing, popular man with the biggest heart and will be sorely missed.

Lover of Hindi music and film, photography, gardening, wildlife and technology, Ishwar was always the first to secure the latest must-have gadget. He also loved to travel and his family have such fond memories of the many adventures he took them on.

Married to Usha for 51 years, Ishwar was father to Yogita, Mohit and Anika and grandfather to Iyla, Louie and Josh.

He adored and was adored by his three grandchildren.

Dr Bhatia's legacy remains in the form of all the people he has cared for and the lives he has saved, the doctors he has trained and mentored, who are caring for people now and the inspiration he has given his family to work hard and be humble.

Myself Subhash Gandhi ,cousin of Usha, from her father's side living in Delhi.
.Extremely sad to know about the sad demise of dear Dr.Ishu(he was fondly known by this name). He was down to earth person, very smiling face, friendly with everyone. I attended the marriage of Usha with Dr Ishu in Agra. When he shifted to Delhi,we used to meet both of them and have many fond memories.
I last met him alongwith usha at my niece's wedding in 2009. He was at his usual gentle, very friendly , smiling as ever.
I ,alongwith my family, convey our condolences to Usha & family. God give them strength to give them strength to bear this loss.

  • An absolute gentleman of the old school - he was fascinating to listen to, when he described how the mid-20th Century played out, and the need for his parents to migrate during India's partition. His family have lost an elder statesman but we in the NHS lost a doctor whose humanity and humility we all recognised and we will be sad at its inevitable ending. RIP.

4th February 2021 was a totally depressing day for Gauri and me to get the shock of our life.
It was in 1968 when Usha and I along with our parents met a young Surgeon of pleasing personality at his Agra residence for the first time. Dr. I L Bhatia was introduced as Ishu. And Usha & Ishu became life partners in Dec 1969.
In Oct 69, my Dad refused to undergo an orthopedic knee surgery until he speaks to Ishu. The opinion of a fresh surgeon was accepted by experienced orthopedicians of Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi, thus avoiding surgery.
Ishu was more than a brother to me for the love, affection, and respect he had for us. He commanded respect from all sections of society.
I was a student at Banaras and my first driving license was made at Agra (courtesy: Dr Bhatia).
Although our professions were different but interests were so similar. I always loved his company. He never gave me any opportunity to get bored. Topics of interest used to be automobiles, computers, latest products in market, repairs of household, etc. We used to discuss so many innovative ideas. Little known is that he had a passion for Indian postage stamps.
In October 1973, I was hurriedly engaged to Gauri as Ishu was to travel to London for higher studies.
I saw Ishu most happy and devoted during the wedding of his little girl Anika. And an enthusiastic Ishu at Mohit’s wedding. Child in Ishu used to appear with Iyla, Louie, and Josh. Most recently, BIG JOY for Ishu was Josh. He really enjoyed playing with kids all the time.
We were lucky that the 50th Marriage Anniversary of Ishu & Usha (on 12/12/2019) was celebrated with us while we were in Singapore with Sunny & Neha.
Ishu was a very affectionate father to Yogita, Mohit and Anika, who have grown up with full freedom.
The patients in Ipswich had so much confidence in Dr Bhatia that even after retirement he was requested to come to surgery (for consultation).
Space is not enough for the memories Banglani Family has. We pray God for his moksh (salvation) and peace. God give us strength enough to bear the irreparable loss.
We offer Shradhanjali & Pushpanjali (Flowery Tribute) to the departed soul
Om Shanti
