I knew Betty from growing up on Smithfield Avenue in Trowell where she was a neighbour up the road and lived with her husband John and son Mark who was a few years younger than myself. My family had a telephone at a time when they were not common in those days and Betty would come down to phone her sister. Her visits invariably ended in laughter with her every day tales mishaps and misunderstandings!

Betty became infamous for her cooking mishaps, in particular her inability to get the Yorkshire Puddings to rise for Sunday lunch. Despite lots of advice they consistently failed to rise so my Mum finally went up to watch her prepare the mix and soon realised that Betty was using self raising floor and not plain, something she thought wouldn't matter but in fact solved the problem!

She also had a similar problem with sponge cakes coming out of the oven flat but one day she cracked it and took a perfectly risen cake out of the oven only to drop it on the floor and watch it break up into pieces!

But Betty would always laugh at her mishaps first and she had the most distinctive & wicked laugh, which gave everyone a lift when she was around!

She was also a very elegant lady, always smartly dressed and conducted herself in a very dignified manner, until something made her laugh and then she brought the house down!

Betty was a lovely, caring person with not a 'bad bone in her body' and will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

God bless you Betty.

Love from Robin, Sally, Roy, Melda & Steve.

The Page Family.
