John of Arthur Street, Pembroke Dock passed away aged 86 years on Wednesday 8th April.
John was a former policeman who served for 31 years in the local constabulary. He served in Narberth, Milford Haven and finally Pembroke Dock. Upon retirement, he joined the local Housing Association and eventually served as Secretary of South Pembrokeshire Golf Club
Originally from Consett, County Durham, he came to Pembrokeshire during National Service and having married his beloved Marjorie, neé Lewis, remained here for the rest of his life. They had 4 children together, Elaine, John, Andrew and Michelle. He was also a doting Grandfather of 11 and Great Grandfather of 15.
1 of 6 siblings, his brothers Jim and Ted were frequent visitors to Pembrokeshire with their families. His other brother and 2 sisters, Anthony, Margaret-Rose and Ellen moved to Australia many years ago and John had recently visited ‘Down-Under’ on multiple occasions. Sport played a large part in John’s recreational life, one of the most challenging issues that of being a lifelong supporter of Newcastle United through thin and thinner. In his younger days he was an accomplished footballer, playing for both Pennar Robins and the police team. He was also a keen rugby and cricket follower, having attended an Ashes Test for the first time in 2013 at the WACA ground in Perth, WA, while on one of his trips to Australia visiting his grandson Mathew and his family.
However, his true sporting prowess came to the fore when he retired from football and took up golf and became an early member of South Pembrokeshire Golf Club. He soon achieved a low handicap and became Captain of the Club. He also served as Captain of the Dyfed Golfing Union. Upon his retirement as Club Secretary at South Pembs., he was surprised and delighted to be awarded a Life Membership. Due to the current situation, a private funeral service will be held with a service of thanksgiving at a later date.
