In loving memory of Arthur Charles Ballard who sadly passed away on 28th March 2020, aged 92 years.
Arthur Charles Ballard was born in Mitcham, Surrey on 27 October 1927, the only son of Albert and Lillian. During his life time he was married twice, first to Philomena Hart who sadly died when we were children, and June Wastell who was with us for 40+ years before her passing in 2015. Dad had four children, Anne, Adrian, Alison and Andrew, plus two step-children from his marriage to June, namely Monica and Trevor. He had 13 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 6 great grand children and 4 step great grandchildren!
Dad had a large extended family and his children grew up surrounded by uncles, aunts and cousins, whom he loved. We were never left wanting for company or entertainment.
Dad loved bright colours but was colour blind so they often clashed. His favourite colour was red. He loved flashy shirts with purple and pink flowers. He was always smartly dressed and was a proud man and always took time over his appearance often wearing ties, jackets, waistcoats, smart trousers, hats and a bright coloured shirt. He was extremely polite and respectful to women.
Dad loved 'tinkering' with things, taking them apart to see how they worked and didn't always succeed in putting them back together. This love of engineering led to him joining the Army at the tail end of the Second World War, when he served with the REME , based in Cyprus.
Dad kept himself busy over the years and had several hobbies in life:
He liked to play darts and snooker, and loved his grass bowls, he was Vice President of the Bethlem Royal Hospital Bowling Club in Beckenham as well as Captain of the men’s bowling team; a hobby he enjoyed with June. He loved sport and played many in his younger days.
Dad loved gardening – he used to grow his own vegetables, fruits and flowers and would spend hours pottering in the garden. His plum tree was a delight!
Dad loved music and frequently listened to the radio. Weekends would be spent listening to the radio playing classic comedies such as "The Goon Show" or "Round The Horne" and others. He particularly liked Sinatra and could often be heard singing along. He had a prized collection of '78s' full of records from the 'old crooners' and he knew the lyrics to most of the songs of his day. As a child his father's friends would make him stand on a table in the middle of the local pub and sing them a song. Dad always liked to sing and joined a choir in his late 80’s with Alison which was run by his granddaughter Nicole. When his dementia was particularly bad, singing to him and with him would settle and calm him. One of his last requests was for his children to sing to him.
Most of all he loved nothing more than spending time with his family, especially if it involved a meal out or a trip to the garden centre always accompanied by coffee and cake.
Dad loved to socialise and had many friends from vastly different backgrounds and loved them all.
As a child he was full of mischief and he often reminisced about the past and the pranks he used to perform with his two best friends, Charlie and Harold.
Although he could be strict, he was always fair (even if we didn't think so at the time) and he taught us strong values and morals that have seen us overcome many trials and tribulations.
In his final years, dad was afflicted with dementia, but he still managed a smile and a song with family and friends. His time at Pemberley House was very enjoyable for dad. He had been struggling at home and he found the comfort of others a big help. The staff there were exceptional and when we were unable to care and look after our father they took our place treating him with the love, kindness and dignity that this great man deserved.
We would love you to share the day and your memories with us, but sadly, due to current restrictions, it will be a closed christian service, with just his children present. But we have arranged for the service to be filmed and it will be broadcast live via the internet.
Please send us your memories/photographs/poems, etc and we will publish as many as we can. Just follow the links and instructions, thank you.
