In loving memory of the late Andriane Papanastasiou who sadly passed away on 14th March 2015

Gregorios Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain wrote

With the spirits of the righteous made perfect in death, give rest, O Saviour, to the soul of your servant Andrianë the presbytera who has fallen asleep; keeping it for the life of blessedness with you, O Lover of mankind, in a place of light, a place of green pasture, a place of refreshment, from where pain, grief and sighing have fled away.

Pardon, O God, as You are good and love mankind, every sin committed by her in word or deed or thought, because there is none who will live and not sin, for You alone are without sin; Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your word is truth.

For You are the resurrection, the life and the repose of Your servant Andrianë the presbytera, who has fallen asleep, Christ our God, and to You we give glory, together with Your Father Who is without beginning, and Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Christ has risen from the dead, by death he has trampled on death, and to those in the graves he has given life.

Thank you to his eminence Archbishop Gregorious, father George, the church committee and community, family and friends for coming today to share this moment with my family.
I would like to read a passage written by Henry Scott Holland, Canon of St Paul's Cathedral, 1847 - 1918.
Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I. You are You, Whatever we are to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant, It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere, very near, just around the corner. All is well.
Now some words form my heart.
Our beloved presvitera, wife, mother, yia yia, sister, auntie, friend, thank you for all your love, kindness, care and thoughtfulness you have given to me over the years. Thank you mum.
Thank you for your guidance, support, and inspiration that has helped me to become the man that I am today. Thank you mum, thank you.
Thank you for the precious gift of life, thank you, thank you, thank you mum.

Goodbye for now rest in peace and tranquillity until we meet again in the kingdom of heaven. I will love you always and forever. Goodbye.

  • Dearest Peter, Thank you for sharing such a poignant tribute with us. When we lose someone we are forced to reflect on our immense loss and our own inevitable mortality. When we pass away from this life, we will not be remembered by the material goods that we possess but, the love and kindness that we gave to others. My dearest, departed Godmother was priceless. All my love, Cousin Maria.

I think it would be fair to say that Aunty lived a full life, surrounded by the large family she created. After four sons, I can remember her telling me how she took the plunge to have a daughter. She then gave birth to cousin John. She wasn't disappointed in the least. She was a strong, forceful lady, who wasn't afraid to speak her mind even in Greek society. She could outsmart most males in discussion but this was coupled and contrasted with a wonderful soft, singing voice. She was probably one of the luckiest people in the world, she was loved and cared for by angel - my beloved uncle Father Andreas. I wish him strength during this difficult time. All my love departed Aunty and to my dearest and most special uncle (we love you). Christina

I have very warm and happy memories of my godmother. As a teenager I remember travelling every weekend on the number 2 bus to go to Turnley Rd. I was always warmly welcomed by my godmother and her family. She treated me like her own daughter and my cousins fussed over me, which was wonderful for my self-esteem. I still remember her singing Greek songs every time we visited and her love for Liberty prints has left an indelible mark on me. Despite raising a family of five, she always had room for me. She is the only person throughout the years who consistently asked 'how is Maria?'
She sent me a Christmas card every single year and I treasured every one of them.
The year I did not receive a card I knew there was something wrong. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimers.
When I was a psychology undergraduate student many years ago, I learnt about different cognitive impairments and sadly Alzheimers was one of the most debilitating that I had studied. Despite her illness, I saw her just after Christmas last year and she conducted herself with immense dignity. She may have forgotten me but I will never forget her.

To my wonderful mum whose faith was complete. Words cannot explain how much I will miss you but knowing that you are in the Kingdom of Heaven eases the pain and sadness. Our one to one times together will remain in my heart for ever, from walking back with shopping in Brixton, sewing and dancing together, our special time in Cornwall, to our early morning stroll to the beach in pervolia. You always wanted to dip your toes in the sea wherever it was. I want you to know that the mother and son bond is unbreakable and that will never change. May you rest in peace. XX
