Iain made a far greater impact in the lives of those that met and knew him than even he would suppose. He is already sadly missed and will always be remembered with love and affection.

  • Thank you Mark, Iain had that ability to touch people with his kindness and his very special sense of humour and of course his incredible knowledge of all things nautical!

I hold Iain entirely responsible for my eccentric and often mocked affection for Wayfarer dinghies. One summers day in the late 80's the wind was howling and all groups had been cancelled for the day at Dover Water Sports Centre. Iain decided it would be a good training opportunity for the staff to take a couple of Wayfarers for a sail. Really.... Wayfarers? grumbled this slightly dysfunctional, spotty teenager as I reluctantly helped him rig one. The next two hours were a revelation. We blasted up and down Dover Harbour, hiking our hearts out and giggling uncontrollably as we were drenched by the bow wave. Ye gods! A centre Wayfarer planes!

I learnt so much from Iain, he was a super-talented sailor, kind and generous but with a mischievous sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye. Sail on Iain. My deepest condolence to Maggie and the family.

  • Thank you Chris, I read your post and giggled, typical Iain....too much wind doesn't mean you can't sail, it just means you can sail faster! He hadn't changed in recent years either! x

Dear Maggie,
So very sad to hear this news - thinking of you all from "down under". You and Iain made a terrific team right from the start and he just adored you. I always recall those New Year's Eve parties with fondness (remember the Pierot costumes?). With love, Cathy

We may have ended up sailing on separate seas but Iain was always my crew mate.

So sad to hear that you upped anchor for the final voyage. Good sailing my friend.

Iain was a lovely person. So calm, dry witted and even tempered. It was a pleasure to work with him. Running on the other hand became rather difficult as he got fitter and fast and left me in his dust.
I will be thinking of you all on the 12th. Harriet

  • Thank you Harriet, was only thinking of Iain's marathon days last week.....do you remember those runs up and down the river? And yes, nothing ever ruffled Iain's feathers; although I may have come close occasionally!

  • Thank you Ian, do you remember the incident in one of your lectures when Iain sucked rather than blew a missile through a BIC biro? Nearly choked himself!

Posted by Maggie on 9/01/2017 Report abuse
  • 35 years on it still made me laugh. I think the paper pellet got stuck in the barrel and rather than blow down the other end Iain tried to save time! I'm amazed we ever learned anything...

Iain you will always be in our thoughts as someone who always smiled. The badminton boys will always remember when you gave your chilli squid to Roy at one of our famous badminton xmas bun fights and it almost blew his head off. Our condolences to Maggie and family from Phil, Malc, Roy, John, Nat, Steve . PMA BADMINTON
