Fleet of foot and deft of stick, Prof did his best to instil in me some of the outrageous talent he possessed. A lovely man who always had time for a chat, a pint and even some words of advice for a then totally irresponsible youth!

Janet and I have known Bryan and Betty for over 45 years and I first met them when I arrived at Nottingham Hockey Club in my early twenties. From a hockey perspective Bryan taught me a great deal about the game and it is absolutely right that he was known as "The Prof". In my view he was one of the best players I have ever played with never to have played for England. In more recent times Bryan was also a great friend at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club where we enjoyed much jovial banter during our many games together over the past years. Just as Janet and I have very fond memories of our times together with Bryan, I am sure that Betty, Lyn, Sharon and Lezley will all recall good memories that will help them through this difficult time. Our thoughts are with Betty particularly. With fondest love. Janet & John Maughan

Bryan, 'Prof', Newing, a great hockey player and an all round good bloke, who understood the game better than any of his contemporaries. A marvellous team-mate on and off the pitch.

Bryan,I was privileged to have worked with you and played hockey and golf with and against you.You were a great friend and one of the most gifted and unselfish hockey players that I have known. Christine and I have enjoyed our impromptu meetings with you and Betty in Marks & Spencer when your infectious sense of humour was awesome. So many happy memories.
