Greta Young, from Billinghay, passed away peacefully on 28th November 2016 aged 95 at Brantley Manor Care Home in Lincoln. Loving wife of the late Cyril Young, mother of Sandra Phillips and Bernard Young and grandmother of Michelle and Richard Phillips and Caitlin Young. The funeral will take place at 1:50pm on 19th December at Lincoln Crematorium.

Greta was born 4th September 1921 and married Cyril Young 8th January 1942. Shortly after their marriage they were kept apart for 3 years while Cyril was fighting in the war in Burma. Greta and Cyril lived in Billinghay all of their married life. They first lived in a prefab, then Princess Square and finally spent their retirement in a bungalow in The Whyche. Greta was the oldest of four siblings. She outlived her brothers Sam and Eddie, and sister Doreen.

As a young woman, when her children were at school, Greta worked on the land at local farms potato picking and beet singling. Her final job before retiring was at the pottery in Billinghay. Her children's friends remember Greta as welcoming and friendly ("even to weirdly dressed teenagers"). Famed for her custard tarts and mince pies, she "baked the best cakes and pastries". Cyril and Greta grew their own vegetables and she did a great Sunday dinner with all the trimmings. Both Cyril and Greta were keen bowlers and won many trophies over the years.
