In loving memory of Raymond Arthur Sheppard who sadly passed away on 21st September 2016.

Ray - a man who loved to laugh and to live.

At 90+ yrs 'wheels on meals' meant Ray delivering his own home cooking to others much younger than himself.
Never to think he was too old, he would come to the rescue of someone half his age struggling to lift a bag of earth or heavy object in the garden.

A man who thought of others and brightened up all our lives, with his wit, kindness and sense of mischief!

If there really are Pearly Gates - by now he will have given them a coat of paint to freshen them up. Rest in peace Ray.
With all our love.

From us all in Scotland, (apologies for the late posting, returning from holiday in Canada, jet lag took longer than usual to wear off! - it must be our age...)
We all enjoyed spending time with Phyl & Ray, they lightened every occasion with their presence - from my childhood Ray would survey the oil seed grape fields around our home and then tell me whether it was going to be a good year for the custard harvest!! We also helped him a couple of times as Andy & I travelled with the RAF; he sent a Valentine's card to a relative every year, from some different exotic place! always a mystery... We shall miss him enormously, and send our love to Julie & Martin and hope they are comforted by the knowledge of how much he was loved. Greta & Andy, Clare, Rachel & Family, and Dink, XXX

2005, we met at Mottisfont Gardens, as Phyl , Ray and I always enjoyed visiting gardens. They were lifelong friends of mine and always kept in touch even when we were all unable to travel as much as we were used to doing.Doris Austin.

Clare Willis, sending this memory from a visit in 1997, it was always a joy to visit Auntie Phyl & Uncle Ray, we had lovely outings and always superb meals, their cooking was legendary!! I'm currently working in Singapore, hence the time delay .

Family Gathering in 1983 in honour of Lydia Newham's 9oth birthday. We all loved getting together over the years, and Ray's wit and sparkle always enlivened every occasion.

A lovely man who always had a smile, a cheeky comment and a twinkle in his eyes. You couldn't help but smile when you were with him. What a wonderful legacy.

Wonderful memories of growing up as a neighbour of happy smiling Ray or " Mr Sheppard "as he was affectionately known to my brother Jamie and I . Our house would be eerily silent when Jamie was along "helping Mr Sheppard in the garage " . Other times Ray would be nattering to Mum & Dad in our kitchen over a cuppa and cigarette ! We used to see him go to work in his smart bowler hat ( bobble hat reserved for off duty ) and to me he was like our very own David Niven or John Steed from The Avengers. Such a thoughtful man , he once bought me a bouquet of flowers when we bumped into each other in the Norbury florist & he didn't tell me they were from him - the sales lady told me afterwards ! My husband Brian and I enjoy looking at the Virginia Creeper cutting he gave us for the garden and it has now taken over one whole side. We will always remember him fondly . As for the squawking Miner bird - well that's another story !!
Much love
Rosemary & Brian & Jamie

So many memories of Ray and Phyllis since I was 12 years old ...Christmas with our families, many parties! Going to Brighton in Ray's open top car. Ray was always smiling, the secret to a long life I think. He was the first man to give me a compliment ...a real gentleman sadly missed. ❤️

  • To Master Ray I am not a poet, I am not a painter. But once I met a Man who gave me a smile that made me desire. Later, the same Gentleman brought me a soup and filled me up with Love. Hey Man with the lovely Ray name. Your soul is a Rainbow winking mischievously at all of us and like a colorful Van Gogh`s painting it reminds me how bright and beautiful life is. We just met a few times but you shined your light on me and renewed my soul. I feel so grateful for our few moments together. Thank you Master Ray.
