I remember meeting a frail senior colleague when I arrived in Doncaster way back in 1982. He had a wry smile and was easy to get along. It was Alan Wilson. I was saddened to learn the demise of Alan this week. He was a friend and a colleague and more, whose determination and doggedness was an inspiration to me, in the hospital and outside. Later my wife was going to join his department as a trainee and through that association I came to know Alan even more. She had such high regard for him till the last day of her life. Alan was so supportive to me after he learnt of her demise. It was very much appreciated as it came from someone who had lost his life's partner and yet lived as if to set an example. Every time I saw him during our regular meetings, the way he was carrying on with life overcoming his disabilities of which the loss of sight would be enough to push one to the brink. I was amazed to meet see him still as determined when I saw him at Oaklands last winter after a gap of many many months. I always felt that I couldn't do more for him when he had given me so much by just knowing him. I will always remember him for the above qualities. Now you have joined Enid, whom I had known for a few years. Alan, I will always remember that smile of yours. RIP

Alan was one of those people who you could laugh with, if needed cry with, and share the most intense jokes with. I am very grateful for his (along with Enid) generosity when my wife was looking for somewhere to stay when I was in the RAF in the early 70's. Enjoyed his wit, his doubts and his tenacious honesty! He also introduced me to Rev David Watson for which I am also grateful. One of life's interesting personalities and will be sorely missed! Rest well Alan, see you later!

To the man who gave me every opportunity in life; for sharing your hunger and passion for the outdoors, who showed me how to appreciate the beauty of the lake district and the adventure that has now resulted ; I thank you.
You taught me to respect others and shared your wisdom of living life to the max. Without you Dad, there would have been no direction.
I will miss your dogged determination, resilience and stubbornness, your wry smile, and the many anecdotes of your early years. Thank you for being there in times of need with great advice, guidance and endless support.
Life is a journey...and you made it an interesting one!
But now you walk hand in hand with Mother; your life partner, reunited once more to rejoice and start your onward journey. I miss you both. I love you both. XX
