Peggie Barrett (12 Jul 1923 - 18 Apr 2016)

We visited Peggy last year in her new home where she seemed to be so happy. With great pride she showed us around and we enjoyed ‘English Tea’ together. It was remarkable how fit she was, both physically and mentally. She inquired about everything concerning my family. What a great and special lady she was! With this in mind, I look back at the many special occasions we experienced. Despite the fact that she was by far the oldest lady in the group, she was always the first to enter a synagogue or a mosque, just gently pulling a scarf over her head which seemed to encourage the other ladies to follow suit. Hetty told me many times how courageous she was when visiting the Middle Eastern markets and how well she haggled the price of presents for her grandchildren. I will also never forget her tears when visiting Yad Fashem in Jerusalem… During our many dinners together, Peggy was always the catalyst that evoked discussions about the interesting things in life and not only about George and my business drive. Peggy always demonstrated her zest for life and occasionally put our business discussions into perspective. I will never forget her great inspiration for Yoga as well as her dancing the night away in The Hague with her beloved George. Guusje and I will remember her as a very warm member of the Group family with a great aptitude to make other people happy, for which I cannot thank her enough. Maybe she will even meet George and Hetty in heaven.”
