Little Tommy

Little Tommy, your big bro here.

I don't really know how to say what I want to say.

I don't know how to accept that I can't be there now. The truth is, it isn't by choice. Speaking out for Gaza has led to me having no choice but to live in exile, far away from home and far away from you.

I can hear you now saying, “Dumbass.”

But I also know you would understand.

I keep thinking about us when we were young. We were together every day. We played army in the woods, went camping, explored the hills and made our own adventures.

I remember the day we were separated and how badly it broke my heart.

I remember later, when you and Bill were arguing over a motorcycle and he wanted to hurt you. I couldn't allow that. I nearly ended up being stabbed myself trying to protect you.

I remember us both being homeless when we were young adults, living together in a tent in the corner of that field.

Life wasn't easy for us.

But we had each other.

And somehow, together, we survived.

Then life carried us in different directions. We both found work and tried to build lives for ourselves. But somehow life never seemed to get easier for you. People used you. You became lost.

A few years ago, I quit my job and left my home to come looking for you. I had heard that you had developed an addiction. I searched for six months before I found you.

I tried everything I could to help you. I convinced some of our family to try to help too.

But after a few days, you left and disappeared again.

A couple of years later, I found you again.

You were so lost by then that it broke my heart.

I had to tell you that Dad had died.

I managed to get you housed, but you were struggling so badly that you kept ending up back on the streets.

Then COVID came. The lockdowns happened. And once again, we lost contact.

During that time, I started a nonprofit to help children, hoping that maybe I could stop other children from having the kind of childhood we had.

I wanted to give them something better.

When the lockdowns ended, I found out that you had met Megan.

You still had your habits, but you had somewhere to live. You seemed happy. For the first time in a long time, it looked like you were beginning to choose yourself. It looked like you were trying to build something.

And then I was forced into exile.

And then I learned what had happened to you.

My heart is broken.

You are part of me.

You are part of who I am.

And your loss is something I don't think I will ever truly accept.

You are my little brother.

It should have been me going first.

I'm the older one.

I have cried so many tears, Tommy.

My heart yearns to see you dance one more time. To see that cheeky smile. To sit beside you. To just chill with my little brother again.

But I know that isn't going to happen.

And that is something I don't know how to accept.

There are still questions about how you ended up where you did. There are things I have been told, and things that nobody will tell me.

If the stories I have heard are true, I promise you this:

You will have justice.

I wrote this song for you, bro.

I needed somewhere to put all of this pain. Maybe writing it is my way of trying to cope. Maybe it is my way of trying to accept that you're gone.

I hope you like it.

I will never stop loving you, bro.

TOMMY

Tommy

And now the time has come
For you to turn to ash and dust
And I am forced to lose you, brother
I am sitting here crying over you
I really loved you, little Tommy

You never knew how I would sit and just cry
With you laid in my arms as you would shiver
After you had shot up, I was so scared you would die
But then you would stop and look up and see me right there
And you would calm and lay there some more

But tonight it is I that shiver
With all these tears falling for you
All my thoughts are memories of me and you
Playing army in the woods
Exploring the hills with you

I am writing my heart for you, little Tommy
It should be me dying, I am older than you
I cannot believe what I heard
I should have been there
And as you turn to ash, my heart breaks even more

I cannot bring myself to think you are not here
I wish I could go back and change today
I keep feeling I failed you as I cry
My eyes fill up
And my soul aches for you

I feel lost in the dark
Like I'm just treading water
Every breath feels heavy
Every second slower

But tonight it is I that shiver
I am writing my heart for you, little Tommy

And if there comes a day when I die
I know I'll be with you then
But until that day
I will carry you
I will say your name

Tommy...

Rest in peace, brother. The long road is behind you now. Though our lives did not intertwine as they might have, only in passing thoughts and wonders of the boy and man you was. I am grateful that you have finally found a place of quiet waters, gentle rest, and lasting peace.
