In loving memory of Averil Heather Sanderson who sadly passed away on 29th June 2026
Averil is survived by her daughter Heather and son in law Neil, grandchildren James, Alexander and Mark and her great children Maddison and Henry.
Averil spent her working life as an English teacher, in Nigeria and also locally at Stowmarket High School. She taught English, with a love of poetry and Shakespeare, influencing lots of young lives over many years. Her passon for horses and all animals was cultivated from its beginnings while she was a school girl and stayed with her even when she stopped riding in her 80s.
Thanks to all staff and fellow residents at Woodfield Court who helped ensure her final months were happy with plenty of opportunities to participate in daily life.

Very sad day, I have to thank Mrs S for being relentless with spelling tests and book reviews. I still had nightmares in my 30s about forgotten English homework! Rest in peace Mrs S.

Mrs Sanderson was my English teacher and Mr Sanderson my chemistry teacher until he suddenly passed. I really appreciated her clear teaching and remember her fondly. I am very sorry for your loss.

Mrs Sanderson wasn’t my favourite teacher - actually I remember her being considered pretty stern. However I remember her saying “my job is to get you lot of miscreants to pass your O Level, and I will hound you for the whole two years I teach you to make sure you do!” I owe my ability to use correct grammar and punctuation pretty much solely to her and her determination to drag us all up to O Level pass standard (kicking and screaming if need be!)
A life well lived and a legacy to be proud of.

Mrs Sanderson was a great English teacher and inspired me potentially to teach. She certainly inspired me to further my education.
She could remember me (!!!) as a pupil of Stowmarket Grammar School when I chatted to her in Woodfield Court.

Sorry Heather to hear of the loss of your mum. She was a good English teacher and got me through my 'O' and 'A' level English somehow.
