Marion Gladys Hughes née Archard sadly left this life on 16 June 2026, leaving behind a family and community who loved her deeply. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, auntie, sister, and friend, and her warmth touched everyone who knew her. Marion is remembered mostly for her smile, her laughter, and the unmistakable sight of her walking through town hand‑in‑hand with her beloved husband, Peter.
Married for an extraordinary 67 years, theirs was a partnership built on love, humour, and unwavering affection. Marion and Peter first met at school, but their relationship blossomed after Peter returned from National Service and began working at Savages. They married at the New Baptist Church in Sheep Street on 5 September 1959, and from that day forward they remained side by side in all things.
Marion gave much of herself to the Boys’ Brigade, following proudly in her father’s footsteps as Junior Section Leader. Peter also served the Brigade as gym instructor, and together they supported countless young people through displays, fetes, and community events. A talented seamstress, Marion filled her home with fabrics, patterns, and creativity. When local Dances approached, she would be found crafting beautiful dresses for the ladies attending — each one made with care and her unmistakable eye for detail. Her love of making things was a thread that ran through her whole life.
Marion worked at Downlands School, first as a seamstress and later as a teaching assistant, where her kindness and patience made her a favourite among staff and pupils alike. She also loved to travel, exploring many countries as well as the beautiful corners of the UK, always curious, always delighted by new places and experiences. Above all, Marion will be remembered for her gentle heart, her joyful spirit, and the love she shared so freely.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the many lives she brightened along the way. The family ask that bright colours be worn to her funeral as Marion was never seen in black.
