  • Hi Peter and Nicola Thank you for the donation and for sharing your memory. My father loved being a surgeon but it brought heavy responsibilities. I’m glad he was able to ensure this worrying time had a happy ending for yiur family. Best wishes Anna (daughter of Andras)

Just read the report in Bury Free Press and immediately the name Dr Barabas brought back memories to me. I returned home from school one day in the mid 70's to be told my Dad had been rushed to hospital with severe internal bleeding. Dr Barabas operated on him and saved his life, for which my family will be eternally thankful. He told my mum just after the op it was very serious, he had only performed that operation once before and the patient had died. RIP Dr Barabas and thankyou.

I have fond memories of working for Mr Barabas as his medical secretary at the West Suffolk Hospital for about six years end 70's to 1985. I am so sorry to hear of his passing but send my condolences and love to his wife and children. He was an amazing man to listen to and I thank him for being our speaker at a young farmers meeting - we learnt a lot about his life before coming to England. He was a brilliant surgeon and lovely man - I shall always remember him.

I was saddened to hear of the recent death of Mr Andràs Barabas, Consultant Surgeon for several decades at West Suffolk Hospital, he once told me I was his first patient at the then newly opened West Suffolk Hospital in 1973, our paths very occasionally crossed when at the hospital, but he always remembered me and would stop for a quick chat, he was a lovely man of the old school of doctoring and will be sadly missed by me and many others, he basically saved my life without doubt. RIP.
Cllr John Nunn SCC, BDC.

Very sincere sympathies to Alix and Andras' family. An excellent and talented colleague when I arrived at The West Suffolk Hospital with so many stories and sound advice in addition to his surgical skills.

  • A brilliant and charming man and colleague, who was very kind to me. His famous artistic diagrams and recording of events in patients' notes were engaging and unique. Thank you Mr. Barabas.
