In loving memory of Peter Hull who sadly passed away on 27th March 2026

Honor Blake wrote

Peter was a dear friend of many years. With his wife Cathy we met when Peter and Cathy’s’ daughter Suzanne and my son Sean met many years ago at University. We all got on at once and had many happy holidays with each other. They to Kent, and me to Lancashire, where my son also lived with Suzanne, and where I fell in love with Lancashire.
Peter was always interesting and interested in conversation and what other people thought.
I will miss the long talks around the dinner table with Peter and Cathy where we would set the world to rights, often agreeing to disagree.
Peter was always fascinated by words and there origins and uses, especially the quirky or obsolete, and was very knowledgeable about
them.
Always kind,Peter also retained a sense of wonder at the natural world which most of us lost long ago. I remember his delight at the complexity and perfection of a minute flying insect that landed on his hand. And the pleasure he took in watching each bud in a bunch of flowers one by one at its own individual pace. All these things reflecting the glory of God’s creation.
A deeply religious man, his belief was based on love and kindness, not rules and retribution.
Talking with Peter and Cathy helped me personally with my own faith.
I will very much miss his kindly friendship.

Peter was the kindest man I have ever known, with a hint of mischief and with a fund of funny stories, often with a lesson attached. He loved and was fascinated by people and could always be found talking to a stranger who had become his friend. He was so proud of all his family and would speak of them often. He was a good friend and I will miss him a greatly.

I've been in writing groups with Pter twice in my life. The first was manu years ago and the second in the last three years. While I would not say we were ever close, Peter had a profound influence on my thinking about religious matters, and his ideas and the things he said and wrote have been importnat in my return to organised religion. He was a warm and wise man, and in recent weeks I've had two occasions when I thought, I'd have loved to have talked to Peter about this matter. He's been missed these last few months and will continue to be missed. Dave Jackson

On a Friday evening back in the early 70's we had a visitor at our youth club. Having earlier been told it would be a priest, we were all a little apprehensive. However we needn't have worried because in walked Peter, all smiles and obviously very happy to be there.
I look back on that evening fondly as I recall my thought at the time-"What a breath of fresh air he is."
Thanks Peter for coming.
My thoughts are with Cath and the family.
My love to you all.

Peter, a dear brother and broth-of-a-boy who preferred me in the soup: my eulogy to him, Good Steward of the Lord.
Farewell Peter,
Precious bane, best of priests to me because human because human in the most warmly understanding sense.
Kind and compassionate but always amazed by kindness towards himself. Why? Could be long-winded to point of conflict but interesting and funny. Loved puns. Loved chocolate.
Very disciplined as a strict priest would be. Impatient with disrespect e.g. unruly badly behaved children. Liked a little revenge on me e.g. when I got egg on my face. I still loved him though despite his schadenfreude. Loved bravely where he loved, ‘the heart knowing its reasons’.
A bonny, proud, lovable man. Sorely missed
Pat

I have known Peter most of my life having grown up as a friend of Gemma's. He was always a kind man, with a calming presence. Peter always took time to listen and took a genuine interest in others, including my children when they got to meet him, and he never forgot anything! A truly lovely man who I know will be greatly missed. My love goes out to all his family.

Peter had a natural ability to empathize, to sense and understand someone else's feelings as if they were his own . He was always there for me when I needed him . Thanks Pete .

Peter was a lovely kind man always smiling and with lots of tales to tell. I had known him for about ten years as a member of our writing group. I loved his stories and the fact that he once lived in the same town as I did when he was a young boy and how his father had an Ironmongers shop there and wrote dialect poetry. Peter will be sadly missed.

Peter was a true English gentleman with a heart of gold and endless tales of life's humorous moments. His inspirational written work, worthy of publication was always well presented. He was dearly loved by all who encountered him and would strike up a conversation with anyone passing by. He will surely be a most welcome guest in the Kingdom of Heaven where Angels and Saints will be enchanted by his wonderful persona.

I first met Peter at a reading group and it was he that persuaded me to join the writing group he was in. I so enjoyed his writing with the unexpected humorous twists or moral points. I admired his kindness and great appreciation for the lovely people he seemed to meet so often. His oft repeated remark, “There is a lot of kindness in the world,” is more important than ever to remember right now. I took inspiration from the way he just kept on despite his age and the need to walk with sticks. I particularly liked, “Don’t judge me by my age, judge me by what I do.” There was a point about one of my stories he told me I had the wrong way around. I could never understand what he was getting at. Perhaps when we met again I shall grasp his point. I am so pleased I came to know him.
