In Loving Memory of Karim.

Karim was born in New York City to Syrian and Iranian parents, Abdul and Fereshteh Bitar. They met while studying at the American University of Beirut. His father’s work as a United Nations Diplomat took him around the world, from the United States to Tunisia and ultimately to Rome, where he grew up alongside his younger brothers, Nader and Sami. From a young age, Karim exhibited a natural curiosity, a love for cultures and languages, and a deep care for those around him. He carried a lifelong pride in his American roots and gratitude for the opportunities the country gave him and his family.

During his university years, Karim met Arzu in Bodrum, Turkey. What began as a friendship grew into a partnership rooted in respect, shared curiosity, and unwavering support. They married in Washington, D.C., in 1992, and together lived in Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Karim cherished fatherhood, welcoming twin daughters Sarah and Sabrina in 1996 and his son Dani in 2003. He raised his children with love, guidance, and a spirit of adventure, instilling a deep appreciation for cultures, friendships, languages, sports, and family.

Karim’s professional life reflected the same integrity and vision that defined his personal life. He held leadership roles, including President of Eli Lilly Europe, Canada, and Australia, and CEO of Genus and Convatec, turning vision into reality by inspiring colleagues through a unique blend of analytical rigor and human care.

He championed innovation and long-term success, leaving a profound mark on the industries and communities he served.

A global citizen in every sense, Karim’s life was defined by curiosity, connection, and care. He built bridges across cultures, fostered deep friendships, and led with both intellect and heart. His life, though cut short at 60 by pancreatic cancer, leaves a legacy of love, leadership, generosity, and care that will endure in the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.

Karim is deeply missed by his wife, children, parents, brothers, extended family, and friends. His warmth, vision, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

I had the privilege to work with Karim for six years at Genus. He was a charismatic, visionary and curious leader, who transformed Genus. Those six years working for him were some of the most fulfilling and enjoyable of my career – I am so glad that I had the opportunity to work with him and help in delivering his vision for the company.

I am so deeply saddened and shocked that he is no longer with us. I struggle to take in that we will not meet again, over a delicious Italian meal, to reminisce and to hear each others’ news – something that had become an annual event after we stopped working together. He was so good at keeping in touch and maintaining his friendships.

My heart goes out to Arzu, Sarah, Sabrina and Dani – my deepest condolences to you. We will hold onto the vivid and precious memories we all have and mourn a great man.

In loving memory and thanks

Dear Family Bitar,
I am deeply saddened and sorry to hear of the passing of Karim. I knew him as a friend in the same class at primary (elementary) school at St George's English school, Rome, before he went onto Notre Dame school; and was blessed to have made contact and have a catch up chat with him over the last few years, albeit on the phone. We spoke about our time in Rome and family, about other friends we shared, Andrej Beloglavec (because of his love of Juventus!), Roland Carnaud, Igor Uboldi, Albert Zaccour and Rex Sampa. I regret not meeting him in person in London in more recent times, but he was clearly unchanged in terms of his lovely, calm, intelligent and kind character. My deepest condolences to his nearest and dearest wife, children, other family and friends, also to Sami who was in the same year as Roman my brother.
In deepest sympathy and love,
Dr Stefan Gleeson (nee Szynalski)

Karim was an exceptional man, and I am honoured that I had the chance to know him well over past many years. He had the unique capacity to make you feel that you were important to him whenever we were together. Despite the fact that he was taken from us way too soon, he left a lasting impact with the love he showed to his family, his friends and his amazing professional accomplishments. We will miss you Karim. I send my deepest condolences to his family.

Dear Karim:
Your premature and unexpected departure has been shocking and very painful for those of us who were lucky enough to get to know you, work with you and call you “friend”.
In this world it is uncommon to meet, interact and work with someone with the intellectual prowess, the pragmatism, the common sense and the drive to accomplish excellence. In my view you were one of those very few people. In addition you combined these qualities with an incredibly humble demeanor, a deep sense of humanism and a unique opportunity to interact with those around you in a pleasant and always friendly way.
I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to work with you and to be able to call you my friend and I have no words to express how deep is my pain as I say goodbye to you. I will always cherish our mutual experiences and interactions and will continue to remember you and treasure our time together.
To Arzu, Sabrina, Sarah and Dani, my deepest sympathies and condolences. I will keep you and your family on my thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Arzu, Sarah, Sabrina, and Dani,
I'll always remember fondly the times we all spent together with Uncle Karim over Easters and other holidays in the states. He is such a caring person and was always so curious to hear about my life and ask thoughtful questions no matter how much time had past since we were last together. It's so heartbreaking to lose such a loving and thoughtful Uncle, father, and husband. I'm sending all my love to you guys during this time. Though I can't be at the funeral, I hope being surrounded by family and friends brings you some peace and that we can see each other back in the states sometime soon.

Pancreatic Cancer UK means so much to me and the more we can invest and raise awareness of and research into pancreatic cancer, the better. I lost the love of my life to pancreatic cancer just under 2 years ago after Trevor's courageous 1.5 year battle. This donation is in memory of Karim, the most inspiring leader you could wish for and the reason I decided to join Convatec permanently in 2020. Karim's loss is another deeply powerful reminder of how much more needs to be done to get better outcomes for people with this cancer.
