Dearest Mary, what a wonderful person you were! So sweet and determined. Your love for beauty always spread out from your eyes, whether it was the beauty of a flower, a landscape, a building, a 16th-century painting, or the soul of a person. You loved Italy, and I will be eternally grateful for that. Talking to you was so exciting, even in Italian: I was feeling your passion for studying it and the strength of your love for culture. You and Roger seemed to be created for each other by Nature. You never flaunted anything, but you would light up when you spoke to me about Sarah and Jane. Thank you for sharing those beautiful days in Ferrara and Dundee with Roger and me.
