It is with deep sadness that the family of Michael Roland Smith announces his passing on 6th October 2025, at the age of 76.

Funeral dress code: "Bright and jolly" - as requested by Michael.

Born in Lewisham in 1948, Michael lived a life defined by integrity, passion, and devotion to both his work and loved ones. A principled man with a strong sense of justice, he began his career working for the railway union, standing up for the rights of working people, before retraining and serving his community as a psychiatric nurse for over 25 years.

Michael had a deep love for music, especially Dire Straits, and was a talented guitarist, playing in many bands throughout his life. Whether performing or simply enjoying a good album, music was a constant companion. He was also an avid reader of books and poetry, and his curiosity and passion for his hobbies were infectious to those around him.

Michael had a sharp and delightful sense of humour. He always found light in the darkest of situations and was always able to lift the spirits of those around him when life got tough.

Above all, Michael was a family man. He was deeply loved by his wife, children and grandchildren, and that love was returned in full by a generous and loving man. His warmth, humour, and unwavering support will be deeply missed.

A private funeral will be held with close family and friends, in accordance with his wishes.

The family asks that those who knew Michael take a moment to enjoy a favourite song, read a good book, or simply spend time with loved ones, just as he would have wanted.

I worked with Mike over a few years, I learnt so much from him, his kindness both to patients and staff was immeasurable. He just understood how people felt, especially those with devastating and life changing diagnoses. He was a natural, so easy to talk to. We remained friends, a wonderful human and Registered Mental Health Nurse x
