In loving memory of Alan Hicken who sadly passed away on 21st August 2025

Born 1944 in Birmingham, growing up in Washwood Heath. Left school, after completing an additional year, at the age of 16 and started an electric apprenticeship with the Electricity Board.

Married Pauline, in 1964, after a chance meeting on a May Bank holiday train trip to Rhyl a few years earlier. Loving Father to two sons and Granddad to two granddaughters.

Hard working, joining a self build group, building a new family home, whilst juggling a baby with another on the way and undertaking his normal day job.

Skip forward a few years, when the boys had finally left home, discovered the joys of walking, joining the Ramblers. This became a part of his life for 30+ years with many miles covered, good friends made and lots of laughs and happy memories.

Quietly joyful, well not always that quiet, and a major figure in my childhood.

My deepest condolences to Alan’s family. To me, growing up with Brian, he was either Mr Hicken or Brian’s Dad. Even just before his passing, I don’t think I could have called him Alan. It’s a generational thing I expect. That being said Alan was a warm and kind man, always friendly and never made any of the old crowd feel that we were a bother or too much trouble. A good man, and a life well lived. My deepest respect.
