Sylvie was a lovely caring member of our wider circle of cousins/ relatives. I will always remember Auntie Doris saying that Derek was waving Syvie off at the station for her next duty at Addenbrooks or picking her up after her duty finished. She was an adored wife to Derek and Mum/Grandma to her family. Also a cherished cousin to us all. I know that I can speak for all the Friend family, (though only three of us left). Syvie & Derek are held fondly in our hearts now and always, much love to you Derek, from Dave, Daph, Jo, Chris & Anthony Rudc

I remember Sylvie as a lovely calm person, always smiling and very kind. When John, my husband, and I wanted to have a holiday yet at the same time my mother needed someone to care for her, Sylvie went over to her house and slept there for a week so that we could get away.

You and Sylvia helped us out with so many things Derek, not the least of which were trips in your car, sometimes on long journeys too.

I remember once when Pam and Daph were down from Carlisle you and Sylvie came round for an evening meal with us. I also remember that Pam was talking about what Jesus did when He died on the cross for us, to forgive the sins and mistakes of everyone who put their trust in Him so that we can have eternal life in heaven, and I noticed that Sylvie was nodding in agreement. I am so glad that Sylvie was a believer and is in heaven now – yes, her body is left behind for the time being but her soul and spirit are there.

Derek, you have been a wonderful husband in the way you have cared for Sylvie. I hope you will be able to get some rest now as you adjust to a different way of life.

With my love and ongoing prayers,
Maureen

Barbara and I have so many memories of Sylvia which makes it difficult to know where to begin . Perhaps the Cock and Pye pub in Ipswich might be a good starting point where we spent enjoyable evenings with Sylvia and Derek in the 60’s . Sylvia loved a rum and black ( or two ) and was always fun to be with and had a great sense of humour.

Mark and David often recall enjoyable times they spent with their auntie who always gave them time and showed genuine interest in their schooling and childhood lives . Sylvia was a great cook and they enjoyed her homemade treats! These memories will always stay with them .

Her caring and kind nature was self evident and stood her in good stead throughout her successful nursing career ( something I suspect which flourished from growing up in the loving home of her parents , Harold and Molly and her brother Lawrence).

Sylvia was a very proud mother and alongside Derek they raised two wonderful children in Rachel and Steven . She adored all her grandchildren and loved nothing more than to share with us stories about them .

In Sylvia’s latter years Derek has been her rock and cared tirelessly for her during this sad illness.

We miss you Sylvia but you will live on in our memories .

Some of my happiest childhood memories are of visits to Ipswich, playing in the garden at the grandparents or round Derek & Sylvia's. She was such a warm and loving auntie, always genuinely interested in how me and David were doing at school, or how much we were growing up, or how our football teams had been getting on. She was kind, and fun and easy to talk to, even as a kid. The cruel disease may have diminished her last years, but I'll always remember her as an amazing auntie and a wonderful person.

Sylvia and I worked on night duty at Ipswich hospital for a very long time. We covered the whole week, overlapping for one night. She was one of the best Nurses I ever worked with. She was so kind and caring and the patients always came first. We all loved the way she was so committed to her nursing role. The patients and staff felt safe when she was on duty. Another time I remember so well was walking the dogs on the Heath.
I want to offer my deep condolences to the whole family on the loss of dear Sylvia. Derek you have been the best husband to her. Unfortunately I will not be able to come to the funeral. I will be abroad with my family and am not able to change the date. I will, of course, be thinking of you all on that day and remembering Sylvia in my prayers
