Biography:
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Mike, who was tragically killed on 21st June 2025 on his way home from a night out. He will be remembered as a great dad and loving grandad.
A passionate sportsman, Mike began playing hockey, cricket and rugby at Erith Grammar school and eventually moved into club hockey, representing BICC and Old Erithians. He also played 1st XI cricket for both Blackheath and Bexley CC, as well as for Erith, Balfour Beatty (a club run by his father Percy and mother Alma) and Dartfordians.
BICC became Bexley Invicta and Mike held most committee posts at one stage or another, ending as club captain prior to the merge with Burnt Ash. He was a quick striker who was difficult to play against being left handed, and scored more than 500 goals for BI over the years.
He ran a colts hockey team at BI for a number of years, and a lot of now Burnt Ash players past and present began hockey under their wing. He also ran a junior team at Bexley Cricket Club for 6 years and occasionally helped the 4th XI with umpiring when his son played.
In recent years Mike had moved to Bexley to be nearer his son Stephen and Daughter in Law Katy (as well as nearer the club!), and he had really taken to his weekends at the club with his grandson Aiden.
Mike remained a keen umpire at Burnt Ash where his sister Shirley used to play and Stephen acts as men’s club captain, and in the 2024/25 season he umpired more games for BA than anyone.
Mike will be sorely missed by his family, members of both clubs and many people in Belvedere and Bexley villages, where he was a popular character in the local pubs
RIP Mike.
