In loving memory of Gladys Hatt who sadly passed away on 18th June 2025

Simon Thompson wrote

Gran was always very kind to my sister and I, making it feel secret when she slipped us 1 pound coins in a closed fist when we said our good byes. She always said to me when you become a brain surgeon or lawyer you will see me right wont you Simon.
I remember every so often when we were younger what seemed like a very long journey in the car with my sister and mum and dad to Norwich to see gran i remember taking lego to play with. I remember borrowing her bike to ride up and down the road outside her house. At Christmas she made us both special jumpers she had knitted herself, she gave us brand new shiny 1 and 2 pence pieces. After I had passed my driving test, I drove to grans sometimes on weekends and I remember she used to always be listening to country and western music on radio broadland as i walked in and she had a gas cooker she would made toast on and made a great shepards pie with beans ready for me and it tasted great. She always had a tin of biscuits to offer with a cup of tea. After she moved to Stowmarket she always asked how things where and was still trying to slip me money when she said good bye despite me insisting I don't need it. Always loving Always caring.

Dear Carolyn, John and all the family , we are thinking of you all at this sad time. It was always a pleasure to see Gladys’ lovely smile and talk to her when we met at family celebrations with Uncle George. Uncle George so enjoyed the days out that you took him on with Gladys and the Christmas times spent with you all too. Our love to you all, Margaret and Roger

I am so sorry to hear that Gladys has left us. She was such a key character in my SJA career. From the numerous ice creams on duty, to the lethal pair of crutches someone had the bright idea of arming her with when she had her hip replaced, to her collections of teddies for the fundraising stalls and always being there with kit needed to support us when treating patients.
Thinking of all Gladys' family, biological or "adopted" as we remember a true legend of tne SJA and wider community. Xxx

We didn’t manage to see aunty Gladys towards the end but we did have regular conversations where she relayed her shifts with St John’s. She loved it and it kept her going. Lots of memories with her & your dad. Xx

I met Gladys back in 2000 when Carolyn brought her down to the SJA unit we hit it off straight away she became a good member and came out on many duties with us. Gladys would become our blanket and ice pack lady and would carry our small kit bag. While we treated the casualty she would be there keeping them calm.Gladys was in her element when she was out on duty with us she also did our fundraising having stalls where ever she could to raise funds for the division. I will miss her so much as she was like a second mum to me. RIP Gladys love you so much xxx

I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of lovely Gladys, I have so many happy memories of her being our neighbour on Spencer way for many years! She was my rock on a lot of hard days when I needed someone to talk to or help me, she was straight there! Especially if any of us needed bandaging up haha! She was also there for the very happy times when both my boys were born she thought the world of them, their Auntie Gladys! lots of cuddles and spoiling them and ME with chocolate from Switzerland and sitting at the window having a good old nosy at people walking by, we did have a giggle! Gladys you will be missed by so many! You were a truly special lady! Lots of love from Stef, Brennan and Kason xxx
