In loving memory of Peter Jackson who sadly passed away on 29th May 2025

Today, we gather to remember and celebrate the life of Peter—a man whose legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Although today we will only scratch the surface of his 82 years, I hope you leave with a good reflection of this lovely man and his character, so where do we begin to pay tribute to him.

Born on 15th January 1943 as war was raging in Britain, Peter was the second oldest of 6 children for parents Eva & Herbert, and brother to Pauline, Ann, Valerie, Heather and Steven.

He grew up and did his schooling in the Kimberworth area, and as kids they grew up on a farm where his father worked on a weekend to cover the farm house rent.

Growing up on a farm with all the animals was a real adventure for them all, and both Peter and his sister Ann have very fond memories of that time in their life.

After leaving school, Peter went to work at Beetson Clarkes where he spent the whole of his working life, and over the years he had various roles and earned promotion to Foreman. His sister Heather recalls how her big brother would always bring chocolate bars home for his younger siblings when pay day came around every Friday.

Ann remembers when she worked at Beatson Clark with Peter, having so many friends who just had the hots for her good looking brother.

One of his jobs was driving the forklift and stacking the products which is how he met June in 1965 who worked there as a packer. He spotted June on the factory floor and chose her before she even laid eyes on him.
They arranged their first date to the cinema, but on the night, both of them went to a different cinema, so they both thought they’d been stood up! Fate played a part though, because they met later at the bus stop as they headed home, and the rest as they say is history.

Whilst courting June, Peter’s mum was very strict, and would lock the door if Peter wasn’t home on time. And as he walked from Thrybergh to Kimberworth he was often late home. Luckily he didn’t have to worry because his sisters would leave a window open so he could climb the drainpipe and get in if he was late.

Within a year after their first date, on 25th June 1966 Peter and June married, starting a union that would last for almost 60 years!

1974 marked the arrival of their first daughter Dawn, followed by Wayne in 1976 and Hayley in 1981, and Peter made a great Dad to them all.

June was a stay at home housewife and Mum and Peter worked hard to provide for his young family making sure they never went without.

They bought a static caravan in Skegness where many happy memories were made on family holidays and weekends away.

Peter was a very hands-on Dad, playing games on the beach. All 3 kids have fond memories of their time at the caravan. Dawn recalls how he would take her onto sea front to watch the boats come and go. Wayne remembers his dad would be digging holes all day long! And Hayley thinks of times her and her dad would walk for miles up & down the promenade, usually with their little dog Suzie in tow.

Happy times were spent at Butlins too and on one holiday, Peter went to the cinema every afternoon to see Last of the Mohicans which was his favourite. (At least that’s what he told them, he was probably sneaking off for a crafty pint or two)
Peter was a real sun worshipper too and would always return home with a lovely tan.
A big lover of watching sport on TV, he watched all the Liverpool matches, his daughter Dawn loved to watch the football with her every Sunday.
Peter also loved cricket, but his biggest passion was horse racing, having a daily flutter and usually being quite lucky because he studied the form thoroughly. He also spent happy hours in the garden tending to his veg patch.
Peter proudly watched his children grow and achieve their ambitions, and he and June enjoyed a good social life often frequenting the Greasbrough Club on a Sunday afternoon with his sisters and brother for a pint and a game of bingo.

Peter was a sociable man and he made many friends through work who he would go ten pin bowling with every Thursday.

When Wayne married, daughter in law Leander was welcomed into the family, which soon grew with the arrival of grandchildren, Jordan, Chelsey and Lexi and Peter enjoyed every minute of the time they got to spend together.
They all have fond memories of sleepovers, watching “Gold Diggers” on TV and playing cards with their Grandad.

Peter had a real passion for researching history and watching all the documentaries which made him very knowledgeable on many things and whatever subject he chose, he always researched thoroughly. He would spend hours on his laptop with his music playing, a whiskey in hand researching which ever topic had caught his attention.

With his family grown, Peter and June took some lovely holidays away together visiting extended family on June’s side in Canada and Australia.

Happy to see Hayley settle with Mark, he gained more grandchildren Dani and Oliver, and a very proud moment came in 2022 when he walked her down the aisle to marry Mark.
His family was made complete with great grandchildren Henry and William, and with 2 more on the way, he has certainly left a lasting legacy.

Peter has suffered with COPD for many years and his condition has gradually worsened confining him more to home in the last couple of years.

Peter and his son in law Mark would often chat and put the world to rights over a tot of whiskey and despite Mark being a Newcastle fan and Peter being a Liverpool fan, they both watched the Cup final and Peter was still made up for Mark when Newcastle won the Cup.

Just a lovely man and a true gent, Peter enjoyed all of life's simple pleasures, and when he passed away on 29th May he did so peacefully in his sleep, at home where he wanted to be.
His family were his world and he will be very much missed, but he’s left cherished memories that will stay with you forever and no-one can take those away. So bring some of your memories to mind now as we take a few minutes of quiet reflection and listen to a song chosen especially for him
