In loving memory of Steve Brown who sadly passed away on 13th August 2024.

Steve, the devoted father of Hannah and Daniel and husband of Rebecca, has died aged 57. He was born and grew up in Leicestershire before attending Salford University. His respected career of 35 years as a chartered chemical engineer then took him all over the world to both work and live, and along the way he gathered so many new friends. Steve thoroughly enjoyed anything active and social – always happy in the water, sand or snow with the kids, playing golf or walking with friends, joining in any work event, and running marathons in aid of charity. It was a shock to discover in 2023 (shortly after a skiing holiday) that his cancer had spread, but nevertheless he managed to do a lot in his last year, making yet more memories with all those who loved him. People didn't necessarily know at the time, but in 2016 (through Anthony Nolan) Steve donated stem cells thus enabling another person to continue to live. He considered it a huge privilege to be able to do this and the family would urge everyone to join the register if able to do so.

We request family flowers only for the funeral please, but invite you to donate instead to the charities on this page. We look forward to seeing lots of people at his funeral and it would be helpful if you can let us know if you plan to attend. We are also hoping to have a live link for others to view from afar.

we feel lucky to have known Steve. Meeting up a couple of years ago, after so many years when living in different parts of the country and sometimes different countries, felt like no time at all had elapsed.

I have lots of great memories over the past 25 years since Steve and I started our ExxonMobil careers within 6 months of each other, our careers following similar paths and our families being of similar age. From the early days of playing football together for the local church football team, one of the dirtiest teams in the church league with one of the most competitive players I have ever played with (the vicar!!). To the many times our paths crossed and we reconnected as our careers took us and our families around the world. To the more recent times back in EMEEL where, in an environment where daily contact became less personal and “zoom chat” dominated, Steve’s was one of the few faces that would frequently appear at my office door for a quick chat and a joke. Then most recently, despite his illness, those great memories of beating all comers in the Dibden Purlieu Friday evening monthly quizzes (where Steve’s diverse global knowledge proved vital when answering such questions as “how many brains does a giant octopus have” – 9 for those who don’t know) and our ever hopeful (but as ever in vain) support of the England football team in Euro 24 where we really believed England could bring it home, right until the point when they didn’t!! Steve, you will be sorely missed but fondly remembered by the Carter family (Paul, Viv, Tom, Ben and Sophie Carter)

As my first supervisor, Steve is a key mentor in my career. He gave me great chances to grow. I will always remember his encouragement and support.
