In loving memory of Mark Gordon who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday 19th February 2024 in the Queen’s Medical Centre, aged 64 years.

Mark was born in County Down, Ireland and later lived most of his life in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. He was an exceptional and celebrated artist, musician and mentor, as well as a much loved member of Banks Mill Studios and his local community. He leaves behind his mother and father Ann and Clive Gordon, his sister Tiffany and her two children Imogen and Caradoc, his niece and nephew who he loved dearly.

Mark's family asks that instead of flowers, people consider making a donation to Shelter in his memory - a charity that works to defend the right to a safe home for everyone. Mark would have given his last 20p to a homeless person, and would appreciate this gesture in his name. Thank you.

As per Mark’s wishes a small private funeral will be held.

Mark was my best friend and confidante, he was talented, intelligent, clever and a gentleman , but most of all kind and funny. If we weren't catching up on the latest amusing real life events, then we were swapping funny adverts and photos, childhood stories, music and art. The constant laugh about him eventually marrying Monica Belluci his dream lady ( and we all know she would of, if she had ever been lucky enough to meet him )
I will miss him every day, as I am sure anyone whoever knew him does.
His mother, father , sister and her children, were the loves of his life, and my heart and love goes out to them. Thank you Ann , for creating the loveliest man that ever lived, we are all so blessed to have known him.
Love Always,
Deborah xxx

This is such a difficult message to write - I remember the sixth form where we kind of grew up together - our lives diverged, and I am so glad that we were properly in contact again for this last decade xx

Mark was a much loved friend for over 50 years throughout the ups and downs of both our lives, we both shared a love of music and art. I will always remember the times we used to go running on Victoria Embankment and Mark introducing me to working out in the gym, my life has been much richer for knowing Mark, it was wonderful to have him as a friend, it is such a sad loss. Sending love to Marks family, friends and anyone who knew him

I met Mark when we both had studios on the fourth floor at Banks Mill studios. He was so friendly and had such an easy manner, it was always a pleasure to chat to him. I’m so sorry to hear of his untimely passing and send condolences to his family.

Mark, I have loved the time we spent together, chatting, laughing, and just generally passing the time of day. You were always there when I needed support and help with something, you always loved a challenge and a problem, and wouldn’t be defeated! I can’t believe you have gone, I will miss you very much. • I remember Mark getting that haircut, I was jealous because I couldn't have a 'Bowie' cut because I have a calf lick! That was a super leather and brass belt, I think it came from Focus gallery from memory.

  • I had one of those belts from Focus too. I still have it!

I will love you forever dear brother. You will never be forgotten, nor could you ever be replaced. You were and always will be the best big brother I could have ever wished for. My heart will be forever broken, and I will be forever changed. Until we meet again, know your light will continue to shine - I will make sure of it, and your legacy of love and kindness and art will never be forgotten. I have loved and adored you since I was a little girl sitting in your bedroom watching you draw and paint for hours on end. You will continue to inspire me and your niece and nephew for the rest of our days. I will miss our conversations, your hugs and smiles, your texts and emails with your latest creations. You were a one-off - as a man, as an artist, as a musician, brother, son and uncle. We always had a special bond, and I will cherish that forever. I love you so much Mark, and miss you terribly. I hope they have good coffee and chocolate digestives in heaven. Love you forever, Tiffany 💔

I knew Mark initially back in the Sawley days through mutual friends but reconnected when we randomly were on the same flight back from our beloved NI having visited our respective families some years ago. Mark was such a talented man and great conversationalist across a wide variety of subjects. His artwork was sensational but his selection of Irish Cottages inspired by time spent in NI will remain my favourite of his works alongside his Calke Abbey pieces. Gone too soon and condolences to all his family at this sad time x

I enjoyed our chats at Banks Mill, particularly at Open Studios in between folk coming around. Your perspectives and stories added much to the community. You always had a level-headed approach to the art world and were able to go with its flow through your many creative gifts. So sorry that you have left us.

With condolences to family and friends. I only met Mark on a couple of occasions when he was most helpful to me as someone new to Banksmill. Also clearly a very talented artist.

Thank you for the chats and support in my first year at Banks Mill, Mark. I particularly remember a storm on a Sunday afternoon with just me and you on the top floor and winds howling, and rain coming through my window onto my artwork. You noticed it first, kept calm and helped me move everything to a safe place. I was in awe of your talent as a painter and all around creative. I am sorry you’re not around anymore.
