In loving memory of Colin Walter Campbell who sadly passed away on 31st January 2024
Colin was an Essex boy, who played rugby for his county and was a county athletics champion as a teenager. He joined the Army at 18 and enjoyed several tours of Germany and Northern Ireland. He and Sue met at school, but weren’t married until 1961. He received his commission in 1966, the year Andrew was born and Debbie followed two years later, in Germany. He left the Army and moved the family to Kent where he trained as a Primary School Teacher before teaching in local schools and began tutoring for 11+ exams when he retired early. He became a Lion and spent time raising money to build the Lions Hospice – now Ellenor – in Gravesend. Colin’s favourite pastime was his caravan and holidaying across Europe independently, using his foreign language skills as he went, later they started travelling further afield and did a house swap in California, travelled New Zealand amongst other places. He loved all kinds of sport but running and Rugby Union were his passion. He ran the London Marathon in 1983 – aged 45, in 3hrs 19 minutes – something he was very proud of. He was an active member of Luddesdown Church and worked hard for the maintenance of it for many years. Despite being desperately ill for some time, he remained ‘fine’ and kept his stiff upper lip to the end, displaying his army training to the last.

He requested we ask people to donate to charity in his name and selected Luddesdown church repair fund (donations via family and cheques payable to Luddesdown PCC) ... Otherwise Just Giving on this site will help with Ellenor hospices and British Legion. Many thanks.

In memory of happy times in the 1960s when Colin and I served together in Germany where he and Sue were most generous to me. Memories of playing rugby with Colin and Sue's cherry cheese cake are still with me.
