In loving memory of Dr Peter Smith who sadly passed away on 25th January 2024. Peter had a long and distinguished career as a hugely valued member of the Economics education community. He was deeply thoughtful, with a high intellect, many accomplishments and academic successes. An author and writer for the next generation of economists, a talented musician, a singer with the University of Southampton Philharmonic choir, and a fearsome fast bowler for the Economics Department (in his younger days!). As a senior member of the University, he made important contributions not only to the whole University but in mentoring other staff and supporting colleagues. His compassion and respect for others did not just extend to his family but to his students and colleagues during his 49 years at Southampton University, for his PhD students, and even wider to those who are suffering in today’s troubled world. He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, and two sons.

I worked with Peter at the University of Southampton while working there in the 1990s as part of the QA unit and then for a few years from 2012 when I came back to work there as Academic Registrar. Peter was a wonderful colleague, so total in his help and support , so shrewd in his contributions to whatever issue was in hand, and so measured in his judgements at all times. His depth of experience and knowledge of the university were invaluable, and all of that, with his wonderful sense of humour as well, made him a great colleague in any situation . He will be so missed.
