In Loving Memory of Daniel ‘Skell' Mckselly,

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and brother, Daniel, affectionately known as 'Skell,' who left us at the age of 48. He departed this world on Thursday 14 December leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of warmth, laughter and creativity.

Born on 27th June 1975 Daniel was a true aficionado of the written word. His love for reading was unparalleled, and he could often be found immersed in the realms of fantasy and adventure within the pages of his favourite novels. His passion for literature extended to the fantastical worlds of comics and graphic novels, where he found joy in the vibrant storytelling and captivating characters that filled the pages.

Dan was an internationally-established web developer. Remarkably, he was entirely self-taught. He started out in one of his first jobs, asking his boss if he could get involved with their website. Just a few years later, he edited and wrote one chapter of the book ‘Flash Magic’, which became one of the top selling IT books on Amazon. He became so well-known in the industry, he was flown to the US to judge a website design competition.

Beyond his professional achievements, Daniel's true essence was illuminated by the relationships he cultivated. A loyal friend and confidant, he had an innate ability to make those around him feel the importance of doing the right thing regardless of the personal cost to him and this landed him in more than a few ‘David and Goliath’ situations. His laughter was infectious, and his genuine kindness left an enduring impact on the lives he touched which will not quickly be forgotten.

In his leisure, Daniel found solace in the simple pleasures of life. Whether losing himself in the intricate plots of a novel, exploring the vast realms of fantasy, or engaging in spirited discussions about the latest comic book, tv or film release, he embraced his passions with unbridled enthusiasm.

Daniel's departure leaves a void that cannot be easily filled and the tears will take a long time to dry, but we find solace in the memories we shared and the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the stories he loved and the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A memorial service to celebrate Daniel's life will be held on Thursday 11 January at 12 pm at Rose Hill crematory in Doncaster. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to MSF (Doctors without Borders) in his honour.

May you rest in peace dear Skell, and even though you too are now ‘back to the mud’ your presence will be deeply missed and your memory will forever be etched in our hearts.

So sorry I couldn't be there today. He was such a lovely person and although I saw him a little while back I'm sorry I didn't get to chat again. So many memories from introducing me to the teenage mutant NINJA turtles to letting me live my childhood dream of being Wolverine, even if it was just in a roll play board game. There isn't a dice (Sorry Skell, a die) big enough to capture the odds of how rare you were.

I miss Dan, his loyal friendship, his sharp wit and as you said, his resilience. Thanks to his family and friends for arranging the livestream for those of us who couldn’t be there. It’s a privilege to able to share with you in this way, to pay respect to someone I met in person relatively few times over the years, but whose conversation was much more often heard, always worthwhile, funny and genuine, unafraid to call it as he saw it, and always punching up, never ever down. Sleep peacefully Dan. [h] it was an honour to know you.

Daniel, we may have only met in person a few times (if you can remember exactly how many, were you really there?) but for many years you were a constant presence in online communities that we shared. So many laughs to look back on, I will greatly miss your sense of humour and will try to remember you with a laugh and a smile rather than a tear. RIP fella, my thoughts are with your family and friends.

Ahhh Skel, you were such a lovely guy, with a kind heart and a passion for life. It’s about 19 years since I last saw you, which I think was at one of the wonderful Tickhill New Year’s parties! I first met you at 19 when you, Neil, Marcus and Pete visited Ben in Newcastle nearly every weekend. What a successful and I’m sure, happy life you’ve had. Funny, smart, kind, thoughtful, creative and a real zest for life. Gone far too soon but never forgotten. Sending heavenly vibes to you Skel and thoughts to your family and friends. RIP Skel xx

I had the honor of working with Daniel (known to me as Deem) on Flash Magic. I wrote a chapter of the book as well and it ended up being the launchpad of my career. We met on a online message board for people working with Flash and he was always such a kind, generous person. I was incredibly pleased when we ran into each other on another online space a few years ago and reconnected. Daniel was always learning and then immediately sharing his knowledge. He was truly one of the good ones. May his memory be a blessing.
