In loving memory of Patricia Ward West who sadly passed away on 13th November 2023
Pat was born in Shipley, Yorkshire 96 years ago. Her Mother was called Phyliss and Farther- Harry.
They lived in the Sheffield area up until the war and moved to Sawley, Long Eaton. Pat had two brothers Derek and Wyndham. Pat being the middle child. She recalls that she had very little education during the War years and left school at 14. She started work at Boots, Beeston in various departments, but she said the soap factory was the worst, very smelly and not the nice kind.
Pat met Len, her husband, at a dance at the Rialto in Long Eaton and their romance progresses. They were married 5 years later and lasted 60 years. Five children followed over the next 15 years and Pat being a home-maker, stayed at home until the youngest was of school age. Having not worked for a number of years she took a part-time job as a School dinner lady. That was until Len, her husband found her an Office position at Plessey in Beeston, where she stayed until her retirement.
As a couple they loved camping, caravanning holidays with the family and travelling abroad. They had several dogs over the years, but the one’s that springs to mind were called Ralph, a little West Highland Terrier and Pedro a miniature Poodle.
Pat was a very proud and private person, but quite artistic and creative, knitting, sewing, tatting, crochet, but her main love was water colour painting. Painting classes were attended each Thursday night. Each May she would go on the Groups annual painting trip to Alison House, Cromford. She did this until the age of 92. Pat had 11 grandchildren and at least 15 great-grandchildren.
Pat decided in January 2023 that she wanted to go into a Care Home and so moved to the Herons Care Home in Toton, until a sever stroke in November this year. Pat was taken to the QMC – Nottingham where she sadly passed away peacefully on 13th November.
Pat’s youngest Granddaughter recalls taking her on a shopping trip around Tesco. Pat was given a mobility scooter to travel on, which was reported to be a bit of a ‘hit and mis’ affair. Pat found it hilarious and talked about the outing for quite some time after. And one of her Daughters remembers sitting at the table one day and being asked if they wanted ice-cream, and then proceeded to scream at them all. She said at first they were stunned…..and then collapsed with laughter.
Words cannot even express a persons life of 96 years, but hopefully those Pat leave behind will have good lasting memories that they can reflect upon in the future.
