In loving memory of John Leary who sadly passed away on 1st September 2023

Mr Leary had a passion for his teaching subject, which for me made all the difference. I continued to study and learn history through to A level and univ because of him. Such a good, inspiring and informed teacher. Sad to hear this news....

Some reminiscences from former pupils at Carlton-le-Willows:
Mr Leary organised local history trips when we were in the 6th Year, I remember he arranged a trip where we climbed onto the roof of Lincoln Cathedral! He was passionate about history… A really good teacher, he increased my interest in History, went on a number of History club visits. RIP… Sorry to hear this, remember him well from lessons… great teacher and a lovely man… Mr Leary was a lovely teacher… Enjoyed his sense of humour and his great knowledge of history. My love of the Tudor period was inspired by him… Brilliant teacher with a great sense of humour… My sincere condolences - Mr Leary was my favourite teacher; able to share his vast knowledge of history with great humour. I’ve often thought about him over the years and the energy he put into his teaching- a natural educator…

  • Two more reminiscences just received: Yes he got me hooked on history for life, along with Harry Makins, and I remember he also took us on walks around Gedling so we could learn about local history. Sad news... Mr Leary was my favourite teacher who sparked my interest in history. He was so enthusiastic and knew how to keep a class interested. When I moved to a new school the teacher there extinguished it so thoroughly that I flunked my O level. Despite this, and thanks to Mr Leary, many years later I went on to study history at university.
