In loving memory of Richard (Rick) Power who sadly passed away on 4th August 2023

Obituary

Rick (Richard) Anthony Power, 58, of York, England, passed away on the 4th of August 2023 following a battle with liver disease.

Rick was born on the 12th of November 1964 to Eileen Teresa Power and Thomas Richard Power in Enfield, London. Following the family's move to York in December 1967, he attended St. Wilfrid's RC primary school, which was attached to the church he attended with his family regularly, and where he was captain of the football team in his final year. Following that he attended Nunthorpe Grammar School, and he earned his A-levels at Harrogate Sixth Form College, North Yorkshire.

After a move to London where he first worked at the DHSS in Barnet and then at M&S Head Office, he secured a post at the City of Enfield Council as a Housing Benefits Advisor. Before moving back to York permanently in 2001, Rick took up agency work as a freelance Benefits Advisor, work that took him all over the UK until his later years when he worked from home.

In 1989 Rick met Liesl King in Ladbroke Grove, London, and they had a Civil Ceremony in Wood Green, London in 1991 followed by a Christian wedding in Sacramento, California in 1992. Some years later Liesl and Rick had two children, Kiera Heather Power in Hemel Hempstead in 1998, and Ryan Thomas Power in Croydon in 2000.

Rick was an avid football fan who attended many matches with his son Ryan, and who played weekly for most of his adult life including for many years with Snowhome in York. He was a passionate fan of music, and he played the electric guitar regularly from young, both with friends and as a hobby on his own. Rick had close friends in York, London and Colchester who meant a great deal to him.

Rick was predeceased by his father Thomas Richard Power in 1991 and his mother Eileen Teresa Power in 2015. He is survived and forever remembered by Liesl Eleyn King, Kiera Heather Power, Ryan Thomas Power, and his brother, David Joseph Power.

  • Thank you so much for your message David! He's forever in our memories for sure.... he loved his childhood days so much - it sounded like they involved climbing trees, wandering the neighborhood, fixing up bikes, and spending time with friends. Thanks again so much for sharing this. Very best to you. Liesl

Dear family and friends- I know that all who loved Rick will be thinking of him today. 💙 Love him and miss him so.

I can just see him looking out the window at the weather- usually saying- 'there's never any snow anymore!' But when it did fall... he was in heaven! We both loved to watch it fall outside any home we had together- so peaceful, turning the everyday world to something new and light. Rest in peace dear heart. Always.

  • The kids and I, Dave and Linda went to visit Rick's grave yesterday as it would have been his 59th birthday. It was very foggy as we walked in, but the sun came out as we stood by the grave and gave our flowers. We then went to lunch with Jim and Emma, raising a toast to Rick at the beginning and end of the meal, with lots of memories shared in between. We've chosen the inscription for the headstone, and it will include 'Forever In Our Hearts'.

Liesl King donated £254 in memory of Richard

I was so touched to receive a collection pot from my colleagues in the School of Humanities, sent in with such thoughtful messages of condolence. I'm uploading the funds- it's taking what our family is able to give the Bereavement Garden to over 1000 pounds! This is just so amazing. Xxxxxxx

This picture was taken in the 80's. We had many fantastic and crazy times, which I will never forget, including many, many gigs. Rick was a fantastic friend and a great man . He made the world a better place and it will be worse off without him . Rick meant a great deal to me and all that knew him.

Dearest Liesl and family, I have so many fond memories of Rick. The ones that stand out in my mind at the moment are our little catch up conversations, often at Christmas time or New Year, when our group of girls (well, Women really!) would descend on your home to celebrate. Over the years, Rick was always very charming, saying hello and chatting about Kiera, Ryan, Work, football, music and the state of the Country in general! He really enjoyed it when Jim (Denson) would pop in to say hello when he dropped Emma (Addy) off and they'd have a boy's (well Men's..) catch-up in the kitchen. Special times, which were probably repeated over 15 years or so, maybe more (I lose track of time...). Thank you Rick for being so welcoming and charming and for letting us have some girl-time in your home on so many occasions. We miss you xx

  • Zoe- you know, this message has me in tears. He was so great about our takeovers, and he'd even wash up in the kitchen if we'd had a buffet! He always showed love and affection through simply doing things to smooth the way. And we really miss him. Thanks honey. Xxxx

Hi Liesl,

My name is Keith Harris, Richard and I worked several times together and were sometimes even competitors. Nonetheless, the measure of a man is that by his efforts, he left the World a slightly better place than He found it.

Richard did so and I am proud to have been his colleague and friend.

  • Ah Keith, it is so kind of you to get in touch! Thank you so much for your kind thoughts- he definitely left it a better place. And in the end too, the competition and any other challenges fall away, and the person's essence is what remains right? Thank you Keith. All very best to you and loved ones. Xx
