'In duty lyeth happiness' was on Dr Carter's mantelpiece, and he lived according to its advice. My wife Joan and think often about him and his kindness to us and our family over many years. To us he seemed to represent the best model of humanity.

My parents, my brother and sisters and my children owe Philip a debt of gratitude for the care he gave us as as a GP of whom Aneurin Bevan would have been proud. We loved him dearly!

The best doctor one could hope for, and a lovely man. We greatly valued his warmth, commitment, wisdom and sense of humour. A particular memory is of him, clearly in the throes of a bad cold or worse, wrapped in umpteen layers and soldiering on through a surgery. And the leeches he kept in his office! After his retirement, we would sometimes meet at the allotment - we were discussing slugs and snails and he just said "gastropod - says it all" (Stomach foot).
