.....................................................................................................................................................................................
Irene Rose Catherall, our mum, was the most caring, loving, beautiful natured person you could ever wish to meet. Her family was her 'everything'. She had a happy childhood and adored her parents and cherished her brother. She was devoted to her husband, her three children, 5 grand children and 3 great grand children. She was gentle, kind and so grateful to anyone for any help they gave, always, always thanking them and making people feel special and valued. Mum's smile was never far away, even in the most difficult of times. She had a wonderful sense of humour, laughed a lot and saw the funny side to all situations. She loved wearing bright colours and took much pride in co-ordinating her clothes and accessories. Mum was a bedrock to our family, grounded in family values and beliefs. Quite simply, she was a truly wonderful and beautiful person who has left her mark deep in the memories of anyone she met.

Here's a little history about Irene and Alan.
Alan Catherall and Irene Rose Anderson married in May 28th 1949 both aged 19 at St. Marys of the Virgin and all Souls Bulwell, Nottingham.
Alan did his National Service in the Sherwood Forresters for steady pay and Mum lived with his sister Doreen whilst he was deployed. At 22 they became parents to Wendy who arrived in 1951 on Alans birthday June 25th. Linda came next on July 12th 1955 when Irene was 26 and Ann on Nov 19th 1960 when Irene was 31. Irene and Alan had an adventurous life with many economic up and downs during their 58 year marriage. Above all Irene was always Alan's trusted and constant supporter and happiest at home as a Mum helping with the business no matter what economic ups and down they created.

For Irene and Alan the 1950’s was a decade of babies, family gatherings, home and improved circumstances from Alans building projects.

The 1960’s was a decade of growth, ambition, moving homes, losing their parents. Irene learning to drive and travel exploring Spain. Irene and Alan were independent travellers who would set off on the open road with the family and car packed to the gills for holidays in Spain.

In the 70’s and 80’s Wendy and Steve were in the USA and Linda and Ann were married and left home and the grandchildren started to arrive. First Michelle in 1980, Chris in 1982, James in 1983, Rachael in 1987 and Hannah in 1990.

Alan and Irene moved into their long time home at 27 March Close in the early 1980s and retired in the early 90’s and turned to handyman and garden projects. They took trips to California to visit their grandchildren. Over the years Wendy and Steve and children also came to stay. When Alan died at 78 from the CDif epidemic of 2007 it was a huge shock and loss to us all and Irene.

From age 83 with the ongoing support from family and daily Carers Irene was able to remain at March Close. She managed annual holiday visits to Thoresby Hall with Wendy until 2019. In August 2019 at age 90 Irene celebrated the beautiful wedding of Chris and Katy and the arrival of her great grandchildren Ben to Rachael and Ryan and Hazel and Aderline in 2022 to Hannah and Cameron.

Unfortunately because of the 2020– 2023 covid epidemic living alone at March Close became impossible and Irene moved into the lovely Alder House retirement home in Nuthall until her passing 3 days short of her. Birthday and on the exact same day as Alan - 19th July.

Irene had a life well lived that made her happy and she was so well loved.

Rachael and 3 friends stayed with Irene for 2 weeks in 2009 while they explored England and Scotland. During this trip Michael Jackson passed away and we all remember her running into our rooms at 6am yelling “Michael Jackson has died”.
