David was born in London during the Munich Crisis to Harry and Betty Linton, younger brother to Sally. He spent some of his early childhood years in Combe Martin in Devon, where they were evacuated during the war. He was educated at Dulwich College, and went on to Exeter University, where he achieved the first 1st-class honours degree in German with English to be awarded since the university became independent from London University. There he met Christine at a History Society Hop, and they were married in May 1963. David went into the family business, and then, when that was sold, he worked at the Post Office until his retirement. He was a keen tennis player and a member of the Blackheath Wanderers for many years. In later life he also took up running, and completed many half marathons. After the birth of his children, Anna and Philip, he became very involved in church life. At St Andrew's in Mottingham he was a Lay Reader and ran the Sunday School for a while, and he was also an enthusiastic participant in Famloc (Frohnau and Mottingham Link of Churches). He served as a Cruse Bereavement Counsellor for several years. In the 1990s he and Christine started to attend the Salvation Army in Bromley, and have enjoyed wonderful fellowship and found a spiritual home there. His later years were also enriched by his grandsons: Daniel, Olly, Henry, Ted and Toby, who loved him dearly. Whenever David took anything up, he did it with great enthusiasm and relish. He enjoyed reading, jigsaws, opera, crosswords and bridge. He was a mine of information about literature and history. In February 2023 David, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer which had spread to his bones, and was given a terminal prognosis. This came as a terrible shock, but he faced his illness with great dignity and fortitude, despite the terrible pain he was in. In May he achieved his goal of surviving for his Diamond Wedding Anniversary. During his last days he was cared for by an amazing team from the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice, at home and then finally in the hospice, where he died on 17th June. We miss him enormously, and we thank God for all that he meant to us.

I would like to share the importance of David in my life and of my family, God sent Christine and David in my life back in 1997, words are not enough to thank for everything he’s done for me and my kids. Always willing to listen and caring.
Someone mentioned today that our get together was like a United Nations convention, rightly so, that was David, an amazing man friends with everyone indeed, no barriers to share friendship, to share his faith a true testimony of God’s love for all.

I always enjoyed spending time with my Grandad, talking about history and politics, in which we shared a common interest. I remember him being overly generous when I was a child, giving in whenever I asked for a toy plane or car. It was always great fun spending time with him, no matter whether we were on holiday or at home with him. I miss him terribly and wish he was still here with us today. Love, Daniel.

Our beloved granddad. We loved him so much. One of our favourite things to do with granddad was complete his treasure hunts around the garden! We will miss him every day. Always in our hearts and memories, Ted and Toby x

I’ve been thinking about you all during this time, I was so sorry to hear about David’s passing. He was the nicest and kindest man, always greeted me with a great friendly smile.
I still remember the very first time I meant David and Christine on my birthday in 1997, it completely turned around what had been a bad day during a difficult time.
I know he will be so missed and my deepest sympathies go out to you Christine and all the Linton family.

David was our cherished neighbor and a true gentle soul. His loss is felt profoundly. David radiated kindness, warmth, and joy. Whenever we had the pleasure of meeting him, he greeted us with a smile that radiated pure happiness. He possessed an uncanny ability to make everyone feel valued and appreciated, and his cheerful disposition brightened even the gloomiest of days.
His love for history led him to share with us books about the rich heritage of Mottingham and captivating photographs of Eltham's bygone era. We learnt so much of the local history from him.
David took great pride in his tennis court. He even painted the lines for us ensuring that the court was pristine for our enjoyment. His absence is deeply felt. We can only hope that his soul finds eternal peace and tranquility, surrounded by the angels above.
David, thank you for gracing our lives with your kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit. May you rest in peace, dear neighbour, knowing that you were truly appreciated. We promise you, we will look after Christine! Love Sxx
