Memories of Mummy V - Freya Eulogy
Mum loved to talk about her childhood and the stories of the valleys – well Cardiff mainly and escaping to the valleys. But in her Sisters words my Auntie Penny – “Nessa’s Hobbies was always involving horses from early on. She dragged me into riding horses even wearing a skirt! She found some ponies to ride near Waterloo road, but it was down a long hill, quite a way and when l complained about the lengthy walk there and back, she stuck me on the back of her bike and off we went. I think she was about 10 then. We went to horse shows all over Wales, but don’t ask me what she did because she used to disappear for the whole day. I think she had a boyfriend; She couldn’t be found all day and the only time l found her; she was in a horse box with a boy! Lol She swore me to secrecy not to tell Mum!” – Mum did tell me those stories and they do match up!!
Mum loved telling me stories about when she worked for the Met Police and loved looking after the Royal Soldiers horses and the riot horses, she was always at the big events and loved the Royal Family, but we had differing views about the current Harry and Megan situation - I’m all for Harry and Megan mum wasn’t, She wanted to see Prince William become King and thought that should happen swiftly, like a 1 Year handover! Mum was set in her ways with her own opinion and outlook on life, No-one could tell her what to do or how to live her life – she was a social butterfly and a live for the day type of Girl!!
My earliest memories were the good old UK holidays and visiting Grandma in Wales and Grandpa In Bath. I remember always on adventures always on a beach or playing in the sand, Mum always made it fun and exciting wherever we went. I remember spending summers and Christmas with my Cousin Lara and a time when Lara stayed with us and mum spoilt her and gave her all my stuff ! Mum always taught me to share everything and the meaning of family.
We always had Horses and moved around all different stable and farmyards all over kent, always looking after different animals from chickens to sheep to cows and pigs! And we always had pet dogs, cats hamsters, guinea pigs and so many rabbits – they kept multiplying, I took them home took out my clothes from my draws and filled it with rabbits, when mum found out she didn’t say anything! No rules BUT even she had to draw the line when rabbits started producing Siamese rabbits!! Two heads 6 legs …. Actually …
Most people would say mum was very resourceful, its true I remember she started Importing Danish Warmbloods from Denmark, they were either foals or young and needed homes and some neglected, but beautiful bloodlines for Dressage and stunning horses. We used to feed them up and break them in - i always wanted to go with mum to Denmark but it was business i always had school, mum loved her trips always bringing us back clogs as souvenirs.
Mum was very competitive Travelling all over the country at weekends to various horse shows, with mum competing in dressage competitions and we did all the kiddies shows but my favourite time was when we did yearly theatrical dressage shows with the horses. I remember how exciting it was helping mum paint the ponies and plaiting them up assisting the people in the makeshift dressing rooms and then performing in the shows was so exciting.
Mum really was competitive and always into sports either watching it or playing it - during my school years; Mum played Netball and compete for Kent and In retirement she played Pétanque at Hartley Country Club she thoroughly enjoyed and went all over Kent with her friends competing and she loved her time spent down the Club. Especially the kids Christmas shows we all went down Christmas time with the whole crew of grandchildren and extended grandchildren.
Mum got Tyra into gymnastics from as early as possible when beaming stars started in NAG! Always there watching and supporting Tyra in her shows from mini shows at local fetes, to big Acro displays in London and Tyras most recent Gymnastics competitions, where mum was so happy and excited that she saw her win 2 Gold medals and she even managed to get me a good video which was a first her photography skills were shocking!! Another thing mum was on at me to do was get Kiara into Dancing and she was desperate to get GG to try riding the ponies when she saw the little yard advertising in my local area – always thinking of how they can do extra activities.
Mum like a little flutter on the GG’s too - unfortunately, the last horse race she bet on was the grand national, she didn’t win, but lucky for her it was only a £10 bet 🫣🫣 – the month before that she won £80 so I set a £10 a month limit on her account to prevent her becoming a gambling addict! So basically, you could say mums personality was a bit of a gambler and always there for the thrill but apart from that Mum was a giving person always sharing what she had with others and buying presents for every occasion and always going overboard buying me and her grandchildren presents! Any excuse for a gathering, a party and always enjoyed being around people - everywhere we moved to, we had the whole neighbourhood of kids round our house or us round their houses and all the parents looked out for all of us kids, from day 1. Our house was the no1 party house from our teenage years - turned adulthood creating unforgettable memories. Most of which consisted of about 10 of us turning up at 6am after a night of raving, 5 hid round the corner while someone sweet, talked V into letting us in and ended with Pete waking up going ballistic – but that’s as far as I can go here - the rest of that eras stories won’t be suitable for little ears!
other than being excessively competitive, stubborn and set in her ways she’s was also the most Loving, thoughtful and giving person i knew, anything i asked for, she would be there for me, in any way she could - Even if she had to think about it for an hour before committing to anything, she always came up with a solution to most problems and most of all, she always gave the best cuddles and kisses. So I’ve talked way too much, I could stand here for hours but mum wanted a party so let crack on with this
