In loving memory of John Baker, of Langport, Somerset, who sadly passed away on 23rd May 2023.
John, fondly known as ‘Baggsy Baker’ to his naval colleagues, was born on 23 July 1937, to Ada and Eric Baker. After a successful naval career in the fleet air arm as an aircraft engineer, civilian life saw John continue in the aircraft industry as a helicopter engineer on oil rigs around the globe. Not settling into retirement easily, John drove the local community bus well into his 70’s.
John is survived by his beloved wife Helena, son and daughter Shaun and Deb, sister Susan and her husband Robert, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Daughter Amanda and her son Harrison pre-deceased John.
John cultivated friendships far and wide, and was known for his sense of humour and comical one-liners. His humour stayed with him to the end, finding the funny side to every mishap. He will be sadly missed by friends and family alike.

I am very saddened to hear of John’s passing I first met John when he came to Yeovilton to finish his naval career. We became close friends straight away and this friendship has lasted all these years. When he joined Bristow helicopters and went to work in Cork he used our home as his U.K base until he bought his house in Queen Camel.
We helped each other through the good times and bad although the good times far outweighed the bad.
When my late husband, Rod and I visited the West Country we always met up and where ever we lived John was a welcome and regular visitor.
Rod and I were delighted when John met Helena.
Sadly because of Covid and later because of health problems on both sides we didn’t meet as often as we would have liked.
You will be sadly missed Uncle John.
Love from me and my family especially my son Paul who knew John from the age of 4.
Wish I could be there tomorrow.❤️❤️to Helena xXx

Dear Cousin Helena and family,
Michael and I were sad when we heard of John's death. Helene was so kind to share the information. In reading the obituary I was picturing you and John bonding at first over your mutual senses of adventure. I know you traveled much of the world Helena and noted John had quite an extraordinary traveling history as well. We wish you all well as you honor John on the 22nd. Love and warm healing wishes, Love Cousin Patty and Michael (Reilly)

John and Helena married at the Methodist Church in Middlezoy, and were great supporters of the work there. Always ready to help set up and clear away, John was a sweet, courageous, and funny man; we shall all miss him.

John was my shift supervisor on the ‘Treasure Finder’. He made what was an exhausting shift pattern bearable with his easy going manner, sense of humour and stalwart support of the people on his shift. He will always be remembered with affection.

I met John Baker when I embarked on an extraordinary adventure to work on the Treasure Finder in the North Sea. This was my first time working in such a unique and challenging environment, and I was a little nervous about what to expect. However, John's friendly and welcoming demeanor quickly put me at ease. He had been working on the Treasure Finder for a while. Being exNavy, he was a seasoned veteran in navigating the rough seas and harsh conditions of the North Sea. John was always patient and willing to help, answering my questions and sharing his knowledge with me. He also had a great sense of humour, which made the long hours and hard work more enjoyable. Overall, I consider myself lucky to have met John, and I learnt a lot from him during our time on the Treasure Finder. Rest in Peace John. Your friend in memory Jaffer.
