In loving memory of Alan James Roman who sadly passed away on 2nd April 2023 at Darent Valley Hospital Dartford.

Alan was born on 8th February 1938 in Eltham, the son of a Police officer and a devoted mother. He went to school at Eltham Secondary Central School. Alan worked for Shell UK for most of his working life at the ShellMex building on The Strand in London.

His main hobbies were a lifelong interest in birds and wildlife in general. He volunteered at Cobham Wood and Mausoleum National Trust and Northwood Hill RSPB reserve. He was also a keen sportsman enjoying tennis, football and many other sports. He would try anything.

Alan married Sandra Jean Angus in 1963 and had two daughters Caroline and Joanna living in Meopham, Kent.

Alan is survived by his two daughters and two grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends he was greatly liked with a lovely sense of humour and a cheerful outlook on life.

I first met Alan 73 years ago when we moved in next door in Eltham. We spent most of our teenage years growing up together, inspired by football, tennis and snooker. Also his love for nature became clearly evident. I find it difficult to realise he is no longer here. He was a remarkable man in many ways whose friendship to me I will never forget.

I have known Alan since he and Sandra met for the first time at the Shakespeare jazz club in the beginning of the 1960s. After they got married I was very close to the family and wev enjoyed many meals at each other's houses and two holidays with Alan & Sandra. I have very fond memories of Alan and am very sad he is no longer with us.

I have very fond memories of many bird watching trips around Kent with Alan. His enthusiasm, knowledge and lovely sense of humour always made for an enjoyable day out. I’m so sad that he’s no longer with us but very happy to have known him.
