Dear family of Dr Crump - Robin was an inspiration for me when I was about 16 - he taught me about zonation, and the logic of different aspects of natural selection on the rocky shores (yellow littorinids in shallower fucoid seas, with darker ones deeper down to avoid predation). I was a London schoolboy at the time, but he showed me what I wanted to be from that time onwards - always by the sea, and looking into patterns of ecosystems. I always remembered him, and when I first got a job with MCS I went to the Skomer advisory group meeting in Marloes, and saw him again in about 2003. A delight to have been trained by him, and wonderful to know that he remained an embedded, respected part of the marine community in South Pembs for all those years. RIP.

I was so sorry to hear of Robin’s death. I knew him over many years when he and Ann were at Orielton. We used to bring a large group of sixth form students each year from Colchester County High School for a week of Marine biology. In the early days Robin always took one group and I made sure I was with that group. He was an inspirational lecturer and in the coach on the way home at least half the group would say they wanted to be marine biologists! I will always remember the long walks with him talking about so many things including oil pollution and brittle stars. Robin and Ann were so kind to me and the students giving us a wonderful week of very hard work and a lot of fun including weighing seaweed often at midnight!
I am sure my colleague Paul Sharpe would echo my words but sadly he died two years ago.
I will always remember Robin ( and Ann) with great affection and gratitude. Tessa Dent

  • Hi Tessa I attended the funeral today and it was a packed and fitting tribute to Robin, the family man, his work at Orielton as well as all of his other marine biology work and plenty of fun stories were shared. We also have great memories of all the visiting school groups and working at Orielton so it was great to hear your memories! Ness
