Duncan Ian Henderson Maclean (17 Mar 1940 - 20 Jan 2023)

In loving memory of Duncan Ian Henderson Maclean, husband, father and grandfather, who sadly passed away on 20th January 2023, aged 82 years.

Duncan will be sadly missed by his loving wife Gloria, daughter Jocelyn, sons Stuart and Alastair, family and friends.

Duncan Ian Henderson Maclean was born in March 1940. He was born in Stornoway, Gaelic translation ‘Steornabhagh’ on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

Due to a tragic accident, Duncan lost his father William Weir Maclean at the age of three. However, he grew up with his mother and two siblings, older sister Morag Maclean (deceased) and younger sister Ann Davidson, and a menagerie of pets.

As a child Duncan loved the outdoors, be it scrabbling rocks, investigating ‘rock pools’, trekking through woodland or open countryside in Kintyre, Argyll and the Highlands of Scotland. Duncan also loved reading, learning languages (French & Russian), appreciating different cultures and taught himself to ride a bike, and play the Piano, Accordion and Saxophone.

From an early age, Duncan's inquisitive mind earned him a scholarship at the Inverness Academy, Scotland, and later a subsequent university place at Edinburgh University, where he studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree, with core subjects being Mathematics, Philosophy and Metaphysics.

Throughout life, Duncan was a consummate Jazz nut, but he also found time to nurture his other passions in football and cinema.

Upon graduating from Edinburgh university in the 1960s, Duncan headed to London to commence a career in education as a teacher, where he realised pretty quickly that teaching wasn’t for him. He then switched to Information Technology, and it was this that proved to be his forte. Excelling in this profession for over forty years with clients such as British Petroleum (BP), Oracle and GlaxoSmithKline.

Upon arriving in London the stars were aligned because almost straight away Duncan met his beloved wife Gloria. They fell in love, married and had a family of three children; Jocelyn, generally known as Katy, Stuart and Alastair.

As a family, the Macleans, led by Duncan, valued quality time together be it cooking, having family dinners, enjoying outdoor pursuits such as cycling, trips to the beach, climbing foothills, taking walks in the woodlands or trips to art galleries and museums, including regular Sunday visits to listen to jazz artists and bands at the Barbican centre.

In later life, one of the greatest joys for Duncan was becoming a grandfather to his grandson Thelonious Maclean. Although they only had six years to bond with each other, those six magical years could be a million years!

Duncan was a loyal, gentle, wise man and dependent father (our superhero!). Being a dependent and present father was of the utmost importance to Duncan, and he certainly didn’t disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family.

Having courageously battled with a prostate condition and heart disease for many years, it was a more recent diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis, a neurological muscle wasting disease that proved his nemesis.

Duncan will forever be remembered and always in our hearts.
