In loving memory of Shirley Hampshire who sadly passed away on 1st January 2023.

Shirley was born at St Luke's in Huddersfield to parents John and Margaret. Shirley was the older sister to Susan. They grew up in Berry Brow and attended Berry Brow Infants school, Newsome Junior School and Newsome Secondary School.

Shirley attended Huddersfield New College but left before completion of her A-levels. In 1986 Shirley completed a National Certificate in Public Administration at Huddersfield Technical College followed by a Higher National Certificate in Business and Finance from Huddersfield Polytechnic in 1988.

Shirley moved to Milnsbridge to live independently of her parents at 18, before moving to Birkby aged 20 where she lived for 35 years.

Shirley had her first child Peter in 1988, she had her second child John in 1994 and her third child Rebecca in 1999. She completed her professional qualification in Accountancy in 2005.

Shirley worked for a number of employers including Calderdale Council, Kirklees Council, the Audit Commission, KPMG, the Red House Antiques Centre and Yorkshire Water. Between 2016 and 2018 she ran a café and tea room called 'Shirley at the Red House Café' in York.

Shirley had a range of hobbies including theatre and concerts, organising events and trips as well as baking. She enjoyed organising holidays and the annual 'Girls' Weekend Away' at a spa. She was an avid reader and also spent many evenings watching television, especially Coronation Street and crime dramas.

Shirley completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks in 2016 and volunteered for WaterAid at Glastonbury 2019.

I helped recruit Shirley to work for the Audit Commission and enjoyed working with her. We shared many a tale as we travelled to the audits in West Yorkshire and beyond. I'll miss her positive manner, optimistic outlook and overall joie de vivre.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Shirley's family at this sad time from Linda and Graham Kettles

Shirley was such a lovely, genuine and caring person. I fondly remember her mischievous wit, positivity and intelligence when we worked together, and so much valued the way she could always lift the spirits of the whole team, especially in some very difficult times for us all. With gratitude and with sincere condolences to all of Shirley's family and friends.

Damian Murray
