Tony and Jean were always a part of my life due to Jean's long friendship with my mother Helen Robins. Attached is a photo of them taken many years ago with father Roy Robins.
Tony's love of Opera, as everyone here knows, was legendary. The anecdote - such as it is - is that when in his professional capacity he was involved with the refurbishment of the Royal Opera House, he took the once in a lifetime chance to re-carpet his and Jean's house (what a patient lady Jean was) with the Royal Opera House carpet. As he rightly maintained, all the opera greats quite possibly had stood on that exact carpet.
Tony - you are a legend and are greatly missed. Reunited with Jean and the old gang at last, and doubtless attending endless operatic performances conducted by the composers, as I type. Thank you for being a friend.

Roger Heathcote donated £30 in memory of Tony

Tony was a great and loyal friend. We had many enjoyable meals and visits to pubs and brewery's. Though the time we went to Fullers by the Thames was eventual. We returned to find the Thames had risen and Tony had to take his shoes and socks off to rescue his car!
He will be greatly missed. Roger and June xxx

Joe and I were very sad to hear that Tony had died. He was always such great company. Back in the day, he used to sail with my dad, with whom he shared a passion for old films (particularly Will Hay’s ‘Oh Mr Porter’) from which he could quote verbatim!
After we moved down to Reigate (and pre-pandemic) we often used to meet at the Pheasant or the Arkle for lunch or a drink. Tony’s zest for life, and especially his sense of humour, were always a real tonic. We would make each other laugh by dropping quotes from Tony Hancock or Will Hay into the conversation.
Tony’s love for, and encyclopaedic knowledge of opera was incredible. I was once involved in a recording of an opera by Mercadente. I’d never heard of him so I rang Tony, who enthusiastically asked which of his operas it was - and named them! They really don’t make ‘em like that any more. RIP Tony.

The passing of dear friend has Tony saddened me much. I was a member of Covent Garden Orchestra & our friendship goes back many happy years. Tony was the " real thing " After Jean, music was his great love, & in particular Opera.
He visited the Opera House on so many occasions, & gained close friends in the orchestra in the Orchetra over the years.
There were many stories ---- the day he bumped into Placido Domingo on the staircase. They greeted each other as old friends ! Not many would know he visited a music shop in London to purchase a selection of batons to conduct the world,s great orchetras & soloists in the privacy of his own home !
Humour was big part of Tony,s personality.
Mention the comedian Tony Hancock, & his face & eyes lit up with a big smile !
I shall miss him lots.
Goodbye to a lovely man & friend
