Obituary Kanen RAGOONADEN

Our beloved father passed away on Monday 10 Oct 2022. Born on 21 Oct 1931, he was 11 days short of his 91st birthday.

“Not for you Papa, doom, and gloom. Blue skies and sunshine on the afternoon that you left this world. Although we called out for you, the angles were with you and guiding you.”

He was a loving and dedicated husband to our mother, Maria, who passed away in 2017. By that time, they had been together for over 60 years.

He leaves behind his three children, Kenny, Keith, and Karen and three grandchildren Kathleen, Harry, and Thobias whom he loved very much. “Papa, you have always been there for us, given encouragement and sound advice. You will continue to be our inspiration”

He grew up in Port Louise, Mauritius, with his 6 siblings - Lomba, Deva, Garçon, Fifi, Devi and Rajah. He is the last of that generation to pass away. His mother, Amma, and the whole family were very proud when he completed his HSc and when abroad to study. Completing his master’s degree in modern languages, at Trinity College Dublin, he returned to Mauritius and started his career as an educator with a teaching post at Royal College.

In charge of the Audio-Visual Section the Ministry of Education, he started a series of live weekly television programs for secondary school students in 1968, which ran for over 15 years. This gave access to lessons from the best teachers at the time, to any student who had access to a television. It made a difference for the young people of a newly independent country at the time.

After moving to the UK, he continued his career as an educator working as a High School teacher. Looking for new ways to further his career and help others, he taught IT to adults as part of an Adult Education program and taught children with special needs. He was a consummate educator and an inspiration to us all.

"Like the Nightingale bringing joy and hope in her song, you, Papa have always given us much joy, hope, support and love throughout each of our lives.

You had the ability to be serious, but you knew when to laugh with us and makes us laugh.

We had many funny times, memorable adventures and tales that will stay with us forever, Papa.

You have now embarked on a new safe journey to reunite with Mama and your own close family.

Never forgotten, forever close to our hearts and soul, dear Papa.”

Your Papa's passing has left a void in all our lives. We have lost our most senior member of the family. The family in S. Africa, share your grief & and carry fond memories of his visits to us. We pray Papa attains Moksha in the arms of Lord Shiva and his Atma (soul) rests in eternal peace. We join you in prayer for courage during this difficult time. Go well Mame Kanen, we will miss you but take comfort that Maria and all your siblings are waiting for you.
Take care cousins and carry his flag high.

Papa's last birthday when he celebrated his 90th with close family members and friends in an old English pub. I am sure that he will be doing the same with his departed family members and friends wherever he is now on the 21st of October.

Papa enjoyed the summer days, sitting in the garden and watching nature go by. One of his favourite pastime over the past years.
