John Martin Baldwin died peacefully at home on 6th July 2022 after a brief illness. Greatly loved father of Peter, Simon & James and beloved Grandpa of Jaya, James, Rudi, Francesca, Juliette, Mira & Sunny.
Martin was born in Brixton in 1938 to John and Elizabeth. He was the middle child with Elizabeth the eldest and Hilary the yougest daughter. The family moved to Kensington and he attended the local Latymer school. A keen rower, at age of 14 he was cox for England but, due to his age, his school would not allow him to go with team to Olympics.
After National Service, he attended Bristol University and studied Engineering, sponsored by BP. His initial jobs were at BP, Sainsbury's, Hoskins before he started his running his own companies. One of his companies, Scan, was the first IT Company listed on AIM public market. For his services to the industry he became an Honorary member of British Computer Society, despite being somewhat anti-computers later on in life.
His family lived in Bath, Balham, Walton, Weybridge & Bookham and then Brighton, Ashington and then at his beloved Farm on the South Downs in Storrington. Martin made regular visits to his place in Begur, Spain.
Martin enjoyed sailing and competed in the Observer Double Handed Round Britain race in 34 foot catamaran as well as yacht racing off Brighton beach. Later on in life he enjoyed watching horse racing, cross word puzzles, fine wine and observing wildlife around the farm, especially the Owls.

I will miss our routine tours of the yard and regular updates, cheery waves, quips about horsey women and enquiries as to how many rosettes had been won. Kind, generous but always astute, funny when you could work out what the joke was. RIP Martin.

Last words - I have been listening to two Nina Simone songs which are poignant. They are Don't Smoke in Bed and He Needs Me.

This afternoon I played three songs - The Eagles 'I Wish You Peace', George Harrison 'My Sweet Lord' and John Lennon 'Woman' which was Number One after we married on 1st December 1980 and when he was then assasinated on the 8th. We had just moved into the Oast House. Que en paz descante Martin.

We knew Martin for many years and loved his dry sense of humour and whitty comments. He will be sadly missed by us and we are sure by many others especially his family. RIP Martin.

Martin was a long serving Vice President and keen supporter of Pulborough RFC and Wooden Spoon. We will miss his sense of humour and straightforward approach which left nobody in any doubt about what he thought.

It was great to have known and shared memorable and enjoyable times with Martin, a truly remarkable man. His amusing insight on life and dry humour raised a smile when ever he was present. He will be missed but as a special person will always be remembered. We are grateful to have been friends and will recall many stories and occasions with a laugh.

I can’t say I knew you well but for the few years I have been at Barns Farm you have always waved cheerily as we pass your window and have been the best prize giver with such a sense of humour. Probably needed to cope with a yard full of horsey women!

A very good friend who bought our family’s farm, remembering many happy evenings spent with Martin and Jeannie at the Oast House and then at Barns Farm. Martin was very good to my Father and brother Steve. Rest in peace.

Condolences to Martin´s family and friends. This obituary makes interesting reading to me, his second wife. No mention is made of his first, Jo, the mother of his sons. We married in 1980 and were together until our divorce in 2009. I would like to quote my friend Jacque Head in an email she sent to me on hearing the news of his demise and was on board his yacht Poppy when we first met. "You both quickly became inseperable and he adored you Jeannie, he couldn´t believe his luck in meeting a vibrant, talented intelligent woman to love and who would love him too. You embraced his family, not easy, but you did it". I quote "he made regular visits to his place in Begur, Spain". It was our place and where I am now happily residing.

Donated in memory of an extra-ordinary man who quietly influenced many lives. I will raise a glass to him at the St George & Dragon where Martin stayed during his rowing years, in Wargrave on Thames where I now live.
