I used to know Malcolm when I lived in Scarborough. I knew him through the chess club and afterwards we would always go for a pint in either the Commercial or the Tap. I knew him when he was going through a rough time and was very pleased when he found Julie. When I moved to France, 18 years ago, we kept up a correspondence for a few years, but it eventually lapsed. I was reading a news article today involving a namesake and it made me google Malcolm. This obituary is what I found and I am so sad. My condolences to Julie and family.

  • Thank you Robert for your kind words it means a lot. It was all so sudden, I can be grateful for 24 years together, it doesn’t feel enough time but I am able to treasure that time we had. I hope you and your family are well. Thank you warmest regards Julie

  • Thanks for your reply Julie. I was expecting the website to alert me by email if anyone responded because I had to give an email address before posting my message - so I didn't bother looking on here again until now. A sudden death is more difficult to come to terms with. I feel so sorry for you. It was a big shock to me because 69 is too early and Malcolm always looked a lot younger than his years. Could you let me know what happened, please? I can send you a private email address if you prefer. But if it's too painful to talk about, I understand. Best regards, Robert

Sending so much love to Mal’s family today. I first met Mal when he was the annoying little brother, who always appeared when I called for his sister Margaret to go to school. I was about 7. Mal would have been 2 years younger. We met up again when we worked together in Whitby. This time he wasn’t annoying 🤣 & we clicked straight away with many nostalgic memories. I was truly gutted to hear he had died. ❤️❤️❤️

Devastated to hear of the sudden loss of dear Mal, when Gordon and I moved down to York in the 1970s we joined CAMRA and the Bay Horse Folk Club, and met Mal and have been friends ever since. We were so glad that he found true love with Julie and how they supported each other, and loved his time with his family, his garden, and his football. So sad he is gone, too soon and thinking of Julie and the family at this sad time.

I have known Malcolm since he joined Scarborough Chess Club in 1992
We played in many club competitions, whilst also playing for the team in the Yorkshire League and York League. More recently he has organised the Club Championship Competition and the Summer Competition. A gentleman at the board and off it.
He will be greatly missed.
