Dave was one of the nicest and most supportive person I have ever met and an outstanding scientist. He introduced me to acoustics and taught me how to build equipment and analyse data. He opened up a whole new world for me and he was always up for crazy ideas. My visits at his lab at York University were some of the best times of my scientific career. Thanks for everything!

Dave will be much missed as a great colleague and wildlife expert. I will think of Dave whenever I see a 'mint moth' on the marjoram flowers in our garden, an insect that Dave helped me identify.

I learned of Dave's passing through Fady, a PhD student we co-supervised a few years ago. I had heard Dave talk engagingly on moths, wood pests and soundscapes, but this co-supervision was the only work we did together. Dave was always so gentle and practical. His lab was a good place to visit and I'm sure a supportive place to work. He was a great person to know, and influenced many. Fady kept in touch with Dave and has sent condolences.

Dave was in my first cohort of undergraduate supervisees when the Electronics Department at York opened for students in '79. As a student and then colleague he was a pleasure to know and work with. A very gentle and caring man.

Dave was a great scientist and an inspiration to many. He had encyclopedic knowledge of things well beyond both Electronic Engineering an Entomology, his twin passions - he could discuss quite knowledgeably, on a specialist level, things ranging from atmospheric light scattering to social behaviour of badgers. He had the lust for knowledge and the unbounded curiosity of a true scientist, and also a desire to serve humankind befitting a good Engineer - so many of his projects had a clear, useful application. He was also a wonderful human being, great to work with, humorous, kind, careful and helpful to both colleagues and students. He will be very much missed and fondly remembered.

Dave Chesmore was my lecturer at York, and after I graduated he invited me to work on some exciting Electronics projects with him. He had a wonderful kindness and enthusiasm that I've never forgotten, and an abundance of patience and encouragement for my (very slow) work! Thank you for helping catalyse my passion for Engineering, Dave. You made the all the difference, and you will be missed by everyone you taught.

Wil
